How do you want the in-game tutorial to work? I'd be happy to contribute content, but I don't know what it should be shaped like. Go to the training center and take a class? Do we want dialogs from your sensei? Questions that you as a student can ask? Tests that you as a student can take with multiple choice answers? Or do we want to send you to some sort of arena where you can fight, for cash, differrent sorts of enemies, gladiator style? Want to practice killing hell hunds? This is the place. We could allow for a selection of weapons and armours there too, for the people who really want to find out if the Jaguar hard armour is worth the dodge penalty and the like. Or maybe we want an 'Ask Ann Landers' sort of column that CK could subscribe to and read entries like: Dear Grävling: Every time I meet a hell-hund I end up waking up in the Roxbury Sewers. What am I doing wrong? Sincerely, Chewed-UP CK I'd like some more idea of how this content is to be used before I can come up with some. Coming up with some would be a lot of fun. My ideas for topics -- in no particular order -- armour selection weapon selection computer selection heat reputation and its effect on heat taxis, their availabilty due to heat and in general the various jobs offered in CK and their effect on heat and reputation attributes and skills AP initiative XP allocation for the complete novice CK enemies and how to fight them an introduction to cyberware responsible ( ) drug use the VIP lounges Fixers Ladders Hacking How to find contacts and sell paydata. runners -- the kinds that are available, how to recruit and use them effectively

grävling - the tutorial will be in the form of a story, which focuses on a new Knight getting off the ground. As he goes, he has a lot to learn, and the "tutorial" story makes sure he goes through the right paces. Your list is very nice.

I think it is time for a little more:
StoryTeller revealed around here.
Your saying it will be in the form of a story undoubtably gives you a lot of information as to what that entails, but from my point of view it is still completely opaque.
I kindof liked the multiple choice quiz idea, myself, and I am very hot to write the 'how to fight an X' for each sort of monster in the NBZ -- but I don't know what would be the best format for this.
And I really like the idea of gladiator fights in the NBZ. Then you could combine 'lessons in how to fight a dog' with actual fights with dogs. I can see you getting a prep-talk from your coach in the arena, explaining the strengths, weaknesses and the like of the opponents, and strategy tips based on the weapon selection you made. Then if you win the fight you can get congratulated -- and collect your winnings + any bets you made on yourself.
If you were defeated -- well in death mode you would just be dead, but in more forgiving modes you wake up, injured, with your coach screaming at you for being a worthless worm. Unless, of course, he was in on a great payout for you to throw the fight. And would your corrupt behaviour ever be found out? used against you?
I can expand on this at length if you are interested.

The form of a story == A new character to select when creating a new game.
This new character starts in a new custom region (underground training zone.)
That zone contains special encounters, contacts, shops and dialog that focuses on training.
The player will need to work through the tutorial storyline (visiting, talking, laddering, finishing quests) before they are deemed "ready" and sent on to the NBZ.

Cool!
So you can send them out on a mission where they are guaranteed to fight against hell-hunds, horizon drones, Yakashima Red Samurai or whatever??

Q: Will the story be tied into the main plot? If not, then I have a few ideas
If it is tied to the main plot, then adding a Pilot NPC (who sadly dies by the end of the tutorial) might allow you to not only have the tutorial, but retain a semblance of Deus Ex Machine and suspension of disbelief all simultaneously .
99% of the denizens of the NBZ won't ever be a CyberKnight. So, we also need to have a way to show the motivation to be a CK in the NBZ. or at least the motivations that led to the decision.

@los - the story will likely start with that exact moment (creation).

fallen and @cory: Then I am game to help with the story. Since it will start with the tutorial, all I need to know are a few of the plot points that might be planned. The tutorial as exposition, should have hooks that will push the story forward; especially in a sandbox game. Give me a few plot points to work with, and I can have a rough draft for the tutorial to you within 3 days. Promise! ( Besides the fiction I have been writing for CK, I have also been making my own Interpretation of CK in Little Big Planet 2... as such I have had to brainstorm numerous plot points to keep my story flowing.)

Semi-hijack of the thread, and suggestion for tutorial ramp-up:
One of the thing that makes this so overwhelming for a newcomer is the scope of the game, and the size of the city. I would suggest that during the tutorial the player would have the first couple of missions take place exclusively in the same neighbourhood, before asking him to traverse half the city's map.
Allow him to do a couple of deliveries in a neighbourhood, buy some stuff, and even have a small mission with some runners, and a bit of combat. It can be something like "the XXX are attacking our turf, so get a couple of runners and take care of them", to justify the combat in the same neighbourhood.
It would be nice if you would cover the different Factions, and how the combat fully works as well.
Cheers!

In an underground zone with limited navigational challenges, no walls and easy to find locations. Once the Knight's Sponsor believes that he/she is ready to go to NBZ, there will be a journey section to reach the big city. From there, it's all cyber dogs and stimmers. Attachments:

The dogs are easy for me, at least with the MT Taser unit (blue glove) and a decent brawling skill. Despite Firearms being higher than brawl, I hit a LOT easier with brawl on the whole. The mechanical ones with 20 mental health are nasty as they shoot a LOT. But the newer armor has helped a decent bit.
I seriously look forward to this intro/training bit.
The heat/rep would be great, and how the jobs affect. One thing that is admittedly annoying, is I'll have a good few bars of green rep with an area. But a patrol still attacks. With the flying mecha units or dogs, i can't run far enough to escape, so need to kill/stun them all. then my rep takes a nosedive and heat skyrockets.. Argh
