In a recent game where I was being a Bounty Hunter going after the Exemplar Contractor award, I got shy after a few early failures and decided to firstly build him up a bit. Fortunately he got a few breaks with shortage and surplus rumours at the start so at least he wasn't going broke imminently.
I didn't want to "waste" XP points on Exploration/Negotiation, and couldn't use contracts to get by, so I was left to try the trading option, with no trade skills.
Having only De Valtos and Cadar as friendly factions, I looked very closely at a few of their worlds, and found that there's a great trade route between the De Valtos worlds of Valtos Marquiss [25,21] and Butakov Prime [25,24]. It's not dependent on fluctuating demand, and you can always make a profit taking Artifacts/Metal/Crystals/Chemicals from Valtos Marquiss to Butakov Prime, then return with Luxury Rations/Clothing/Plants.
Occasionally you can go a bit further down to Zu Chong-Zhi (aka Remcoole) [26,29] to bring Clothing to Valtos Marquiss for a bigger profit on that. This world is also great for picking up large amounts of items to satisfy shortage rumours in surrounding worlds.
There's a planet not too far away Gloomhorn [31,22] with a cache rating of 14, if you're looking for a bit of security. I haven't lost a cache from there yet, but I could have just been lucky (knock on wood).
Butakov Prime makes a nice central location to keep tabs on, then get to, shortage and surplus rumours from quite a few planets, and meantime you just keep milking the trade to Valtos Marquiss.
Others I noticed, but hadn't tested long enough to see how sustainable they are, are Antronin (Spice/Chemicals) -> Gann, and De Valtos Prime (Artifacts/Spice) <-> Cadar Pavonis (Clothing/Luxury Rations/Chemicals/Plants/Vudka)
