There was a power outage this morning and my computer was shut down.
I was freaking out.
It came back on.
Whew.

Close one, Cory. Do you happen to have an EPS or other kind of backup battery? Might be worth the investment ?

Yep. I have one. Gices me about a minute to back up my work and shut down. Or is Cory remarking on the computer addiction that affects us all in varying degrees? XD

I've got a battery backup, but it only lasts a few minutes -- just long enough to issue a USB-controlled sleep command to the machine. It can power my Wi-Fi routers and stuff for a few hours, which is nice. Sadly any type of battery that could power my actual workstation for an extended period of time is out of my price range. I had my laptop and WiFi, so for a power outage it wasn't really even that bad

The product How to Geek lists, the Cyberpower 1500VA ... I have three of them under my desk.
It scares me how much juice this machine sucks down -- batteries work great it's just the cost-benefit ratio of having enough storage to run everything.
I have a laptop with a built in battery and a Cyberpower to keep the WiFi up -- So i can keep working for about 3 hours.
The desktop has 1200W powersupply, two GPU, two CPU, five drives and five monitors. It would zap any battery I could afford.
rigging some 12V sealed lead acid battery would work, but I'd need a handful of them and I just don't have the Credits, chummer =)

Pretty impressive setup. My eyes went wide when I read "five monitors". What are you using them for, and how can you use them all at once if you only have two eyes, assuming you're not cross-eyed... Has its perks, let me tell you.
But, if you have your laptop and WiFi, which can be powered for several hours, why not add a server to the setup and let everything back up automatically once or twice a week (or preferably, a day) to add a tad more redundancy to this mix? Cheap ones, too.

You should see their collection of phones and tablets. Looks like an AT&T kiosk.

Well I have a laptop, mostly because to deploy for Apple you must have an Macbook.
Five monitors ... a necessary evil for me. 3 of them have Visual Studio (code) one of them has the map editor and one has e-mail, todo list.
Everything backs up locally to a set of redundant drives and to the cloud every few minutes. We have lots and lots of backups. Do not worry -- I am very paranoid about loosing work!
But the problem is I really cannot work the way I want to work without this computer. I could code on the laptop but uhg ... must I? =)

Do it on a Kindle in a virtual workspace, then get back to me. XD You never realize how much you miss even a laptop until...

Its like when I do geopolitical research when on my phone. Its like driving while looking through a soda straw. I have realized with many things just because I can do it on my smartphone doesn't mean it should not be done while at my desktop. I feel so hindered without a keyboard. It's like trying to run a marathon on my knees...

Even with the font as big as possible, you can read names and dialog, but seeing how many potions you have? How many charges a wand has or arrows you got? F+;&ing impossible.
