I find myself skipping the scout in the latter stages of Ironman. The swarms are too big for Crippling Fire to have any real effect in slowing down the hoard.
My 6 man squad nowadays consists of the captain, an engineer for cooling and capture of TP, 2 soldiers, a hydra and the last slot taken by a paladin/soldier/hydra.
I've already lost 4 scouts and I can't seem to find the knack of using them. Using them as scanners just drives their heat up really quickly.
Do the rest of you use scouts all the time in Ironman?

Yes, but I use Neptunes and never take a Hydra.
So many ways to build a successful army!

Don't give up on the Scouts. A Neptune with Suppressing Fire 10 will help out greatly. Even with the new Heat rules, a Scout will make some of the later levels go very quickly and in your favor. Make sure you've maxed out Stealth, have a lot of points in Evasion, and also max out Overdrive. That talent is the best for using the Scouts stealth ability. It also is not affected by over heating.

Tried inserting a scout with max stealth deep into enemy lines. The thing is your cover is blown the moment you take a shot. Or if some Xeno waltzes up beside him. The risk vs reward doesn't make him seem to be worth the SP.

neveryours - Stealth-mode is not affected by making attacks.

Admittedly I'm not playing on Ironman currently but love using Scouts as snipers. Use Needlers for the DoT, for Talents only take Overdrive till I get +3 MP so they can hit 10 MP with Twitch Kit. Take Crippling Fire to level 4 for the -3MP and -1AP then dump rest into Piercing Fire to knock down enemy Armor and Deflection.
My scouts generally operate in close proximity to rest of Squad so they're not left out in no man's land vulnerable to enemy attacks.
I take Quickness and Evasion to 16 then work on Fortitude, Willpower, Focus and Gunnery. If they are consistantly hitting may put a few points into Warrior to improve melee defense.
Generally I'm not after immediate kills with them, instead their mission is to slow down and soften up the most dangerous enemies before they can close with squad. The DoT is fairly effective, especially when the Captain is also using a Needler and main Soldier has the Roavin MK9 (Relic).
MP is mostly used for maintaining distance from enemies while sniping them.

I use scouts on Ironman throughout the entire game, but their role evolves as the game goes on.
I start using them as crippling fire needlers then move to deep op sprinters then respec for sniping
One thing crippling fire can do that suppressing fire can't is remove an AP from the enemy.
My deep OP sprinter build is geared up for worst case possible scenario., Balast war gear (+32hp) and the highest level auto block gear available. I buy the relinars fist relic and equip it when I can for the 20% auto block. Apart from that I move very carefully. Sometimes 1 square at a time. Which I admit nay be a bit neurotic. Also get the null shield ordinance to use when overheated and prolonged deployment.

Thanks Cory, I didn't know that. I shot at a Xeno once and got picked off by his friends when the earlier ones ignored me. So I assumed that shooting ends stealth. I'll max out stealth and try again.

No, shooting has 0 impact on Stealth. There is a detailed discussion here: steamcommunity.com/app/370020/discussions/0/523898291498833723/

Except for some levels where I use Scout as a deep operative, I like to play them with high penetration rifles and maxing out critical with Headshot, gear, high focus/stealth. They hit critical so often, it's usually a 1-shot kill. I'm halfway through Ironman and haven't lost one yet. They're great for taking out Goliaths, turrets, etc. I'm putting a few point into Willpower to help with the heat.
I tried using Crippling Fire, but switched to using Neptune's awesome Suppressing Fire for -MP.
