Upgrading your Computer

I'd like your computer screen to list the stats of the computer you are currently using, precisely as they are listed in the stores, so you can figure out if you should buy something.

For instance, I have a Yakashima NV2-TactCPU.

Apparantly I have -3 MP free, which probably means I was able to do something earlier that I really shouldn't. None of this model is sold in the store I am in now, Mars Corp Importers.

But I could afford the Mars Corp BattleTac Master, which has 3 jobs slots rather than 2 I have now. But it has a rating of 2 (and I don't know what ratings are for) and storage of 80 MP.

I'd like a way to be able to look up what I have now, and see if this is a poorer rating or storage capacity. Without knowing this, I do not know if this would be a good thing for me to purchase at this time. I think so, because getting paid for 3 deliveries rather than just 2 will mean that I earn money all the faster. But maybe if I spent the money on a different sort of computer, with a higher rating and capacity, and jobs 1, I could finally make haking
pay off. Without figures it is difficult for me to figure out what is going on here.

Grävling, I will give you the best, and most concise answers possible.

1> if your new computer has more jobs, it is better than your default PDA
2> most of the ratings are speed/storage/etc you'll want the best you can afford
3> most of the figures I just mentioned only matter IF you have a datajack, and start hacking.
4> as for -MP, don't worry about it, it will bounce back. it is from Downloaded Paydata, and from files that you upload
……for example, you are walking through North End. your ¥ goes Yellow and a few steps later you are ambushed. skip to the end, lots of blood, Meat Wagons blaring by, heavy on the horn, and that's when you find a vChip with dirty info on The Yakuza. in your item screen, if you use it, it will be installed, meaning removed from ITEMS and now accessible for sale...assuming you have a good buyer.

you can delete NON PAYDATA files by simply deleting them. You can ONLY delete paydata files for each faction in the POLITICS screen.
5> the number of jobs a PDA can hold have no effect on your hacking. it just means you can stack multiple jobs from the same Connector, from different Connectors, or whatever floats your boat. that will make you money fast too. Maybe not the same amount of money...but you cannot find new vChips, or other taxi drivers, or medical fixers...etc if you are online often.


My best suggestion about hacking, especially, is to hold off til you have a small handful of Contacts that will buy paydata. Once you can ascertain who they will buy, then you can focus on that rival factions networks, and can make ¥ even faster. do your runs until your time runs out. press the disconnect button as many times as possible til it gets to the last screen before closing your connection completely. reconnect, and start over again. Also, I have found the easiest way to grab data is to get to Admin as fast as possible, then: decoy , search, decoy, download.
*back out of a system if you have grabbed the 2-3 files on each of the target servers, or are in a system which won't let you network hop to anywhere else.

(with a high enough Hacking skill with or without a high electronics skill...you may not have to Decoy as much. maybe it is my personal experience, but the higher my skills got, the less efficient Decoy has worked. it generates less Heat just to direct download without the mask)

Finally... rumor has it chummer that there be a network map that wasn't Hashed by Mars. I've seen it circulating around these forums, maybe it can be of help.

By no means is the info I provided exhaustive, nor may it be 100% correct. The first Knight I created was a hacker. I love hackers. I loved both 16-bit Console Ports (Sega Genesis and SNES). I preferred The Genesis version completely. {{anyone familiar has to admit Hacking the Matrix on the Genesis version was WAY better}}.
...But I am no spring chicken. I was running the streets before at least half of you even knew where to look. I was running/playing in the old original FASA games. The Real RPG. I played/ran CP2020, same with GURPS, and about 30 {yes 30} other Pen and Paper Role Playing Games. I have been part of literally Thousands of gaming sessions. I will go out on a limb and say at least 2200.

I am also a huge Cyberpunk enthusiast and dearly wish to do my damnedest to keep the Genre alive after the National Press all pretty much decided it was dead. Along the way from 1986 another strange thing happened, while the press deemed Cyberpunk essentially dead as of 1998...it wasn't because of a lack of fans. it was because Cyberpunk was going post modern. we have been saturating ourselves in small tidbits, we have driven the soul toward unlocking that digital mainframe in the sky.

Cory may or may not like this next small part, but I didn't take one note while spinning around the NBZ nets. I kept everything in my own wetware. There are patterns chummer, and unless you wanna get Razzed or worse permanently crippled by Black ICE, you need to keep your cyber-eyes peeled.
Tarbaby will change your life Chummer, and I don't give a Drek if you think being LITERALLY hobbled by Tarbaby will help you escape from The next Knight looking to make a name for themselves...and your number came up!

Using the above strategy I pit together is not the only way to really go about it. I may have made some mistakes. but I would like to add one fine point:
*** when you are going after paydata, pay attention to the Host. Say you work for Yakuza, and you have 2 contacts that will buy Mars data. You jack in, find the DT networks, grab some paydata and follow the rabbit hole as far down as it goes.
You'll eventually notice some other choices. SMS, Space, etc. ((I don't want to give everything away))
Now if you pay attention to the host, you'll notice it jumps. Not all of those networks are run by Mars.
so A> pay attention to the Host of the network you are in. if it is a friendly, and you'd rather not earn negative zRep then once you have access to the OS, back out of the system. especially if it doesn't connect to anything else.
B> just goes to show that the Corps are more in bed than most realize.

I am willing to help with the FAQ. I'm willing to entertain other strategies.

Wait... what? You played Cyberknight on both Genesis and SNES? Was it an Elite Platinum Enhanced Collector's Limited Edition? Or do you mean Shadowrun? ;D

For me, my preferred version of the Matrix would be something like "Beneath a Steel Sky" or "Deckers".

And I believe the question that our resident gamer chick, on how the old CPU just disappears into thin air after buying a new one, remains unanswered. I blame Mars Corp.

Damn. I knew there was something I had missed. I was tired when I typed it all up.
……If you Equip new armor or gloves, the originals don't disappear, just vanish (into your backpack)
once you unequip them, the originals return. THIS IS MERELY SPECULATION, but I would think the same principle holds true. you start with a default PDA and once you upgrade, it takes the place of the original. BUT you cannot sell the default.

I wasn't trying to sell my default computer, but the first one I bought, that had space for 2 jobs.

And I too have thousands of hours not only playing pen-and-paper RPG but GM'ing them
too.

I have no idea why the press declared cyberpunk dead. Possibly because it became too
hard for them to understand.

Wish I could say why the essentially killed it. but once that usually happens : even books that were almost to release failed miserably. I haven't just played, I have GMed more than played, and have even written a few RPGs of my own.
I guess you could take into account that paper is becoming obsolete.
Kids have the attention span of hamsters, and would rather "watch the movie", because; well who has time for that? And who needs to read anyway? ( provided my a very reliable teenage source I.e. on of my daughters. )

Ehi guys but in your opinion where the "100 matrix hosts" are? ^^ 'cause i always find the usual ones xD i'm bored of always switching between the known hosts ^^ pratically the old matrix map(found ingame and previously in forum) seems to be the same...

I haven't seen them. The maps are accurate.
...maybe my hacking level/PDA combo isn't strong enough to see them.
That's a weak theory...but best I have @ this point.
