I'm about ten years too late to not give up. I do physical work instead. As a plus, the benefits and hazard pay make up for it. I'm not bill gates, nor would I want to be, but I've got more than I'll ever need. Downside of contract work is that it kinda restricts being able to follow every whim, but, I won't complain. I still enjoy working with computers as a hobby. Troubleshooting can be both intensely frustrating and rewarding. Building a computer from scratch and then figuring out where you went horribly wrong is a great destresser right? Yup, but it sometimes goes very frustrating with a motherboard you have designed your self and when something doesn't work you don't have any actual person to blameđ That's the best part. If you're to blame, then you're also the one obligated to fix it, and when you do... To quote Wheatley...ahem...Awwwww yeeeeaaaahhh, that's the spot....

Big +1 for SDL particularly for a beginner. Ya'll got Lord Gansai to post. Congrats. I built my first few game attempts in SDL. "Open Settlers" was awesome. Why was I making a clone of the first Settlers game in college? Hmmm ... because I never bought the real game as a kid and I always wanted to see past the first stupid demo level?

We "never bought" / "did not have money for" a lot of shareware games. I think being forced to play the demo levels of games over and over prepared us to do game dev

A Bard's Tale, and Caste of the Winds, and Settlers, and ... Shareware was a thing that worked, and TB is bringing it back

Ahhh, the good old days of shareware. When the game companies WANTED you to make copies and pass them to friends and post them to BBS's. Wolf3d, Duke Nukem, Doom, Major Stryker, you know, the fun stuff

About random numbers. Most of the time you really don't want random numbers. Especially when debugging. Feed it the same seed, get the same error out again, repeat until you fixed it. None of this 'and wait 6 months until this exact thing happens again, then we can see if our fix is ok'. The whole point of this is that it is a computationally generated pseudo random number -- so that you can compute the same one again, and again, and again .... The rest of the time what you want is something that cannot be computationally generated. period. ever. While testing use the one that can be but for production you absolutely demand that it cannot be generated. I like this site: photonics.anu.edu.au/qoptics/Research/qrng.phpand this one: www.random.org/integers/Grävling

The original Duke Nukem is nothing like what most people think. Why couldn't you play it when mom was around Cory Trese?
