So, since we got the template thing going on, what are you looking at doing? What do you think is the most important category, and what do you think is the least important category?
I'm personally thinking skills/jobs/talents should be up high while ship could be a little lower. I'm planning on building out as a merchant/spy for my first run through, so that could definitely be effecting my choices though.
Also, as a question to fallen and Cory, would it be helpful for me to compile some basic templates in this thread/post? Maybe we could get some nice basic templates built, have 'em saved here, and that way when the game goes live you and Cory could have an easy resource to refer new players to.

Because right now you cannot buy or capture a new ship, Ship priority is probably more important in Alpha Phase 1 than it is in release.
A: Profession B: Ship C: Contacts D: Skills E: Attributes
This is probably the best starter build.

johndramey - one of the big in-game goals of the templates is that they will become exportable. We're working toward a point where you can export from the game and post your template as in "Here is my best Spy build." As export isn't available today, compiling templates would be killer. As it stands, you should be able to take a screenshot of the template screen and 100% of the information is shown right there in the summary (yaaaah!)

Cory Trese, well that is nice to know! I'll stick ship up there for now, then! fallen, that is an absolutely killer feature and I love it! I'll definitely compile some basic templates for you two, then. We'll try to get some basic builds for basic categories (e.g. merchant, explorer, etc.) that people can follow for their main captain. In that vein, everyone in the Alpha should get in on it! If you have a template that is working out really well for you, share it here. I'll start compiling them into the first post to make them easy to find, but I'll tag people to their corresponding template. So stoked. Come on Hockeyapp, give me alpha!

Question Will we at some point have an option to make a custom profession to choose when creating a captain? Example I like Spy but would prefer a secondary job of Military Officer or Commander to give better leadership and inspire my crew.
I'm ship commander, knowing how to pilot and navigate a ship, while useful abilities are tasks I choose subordinates to carry out for me, same as engineering and maintenance of ship.
Similar vein of thought for an Explorer with secondary job of Merchant or Smuggler.
Think being able to select the primary/secondary jobs of your captains would help players really customise their main character and give them even more of a sense of ownership.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've taken notes on it in our RFE section and we'll discuss adding it in the future. If we did, it would likely be an advanced feature, an award locked up behind an Achievement you need to score in play.

None of the professions specify three jobs -- and we did that specifically because we want the player to be able to really customize their main character. You can buy those additional jobs for your Captain and officers both.
We may expand starting professions, and we might include custom professions. The jobs that are being combined in professions do so because they do such a good job together.

In addition to lots of discussion and story-telling, it allows rough follow-along with 'Let's Play' vids. This was how I was able to learn RimWorld quickly, by starting on the same map/similar starting characters. Even tho many events are random, it allowed me to follow on a certain path until I was able to find my own. Learning aside, I can see players telling tales of how they infiltrated the distant Degeba System, and were able to overthrow the evil Steel Song Empire, and have links to their spy build and map; perhaps even an exported Captain's log with ship designs. That would be a heck of a post. Okay, okay, we're in alpha... (but had to get it out)

I'm still ironing out a template that I like, but I'm having a ton of fun playing around with stuff. I like how A level really means that your character is basically a demi-god. A level attributes? You're cream of the crop. A level ship? Best ship out there.
The amount of customization is going to definitely make us very attached to our characters and officers. I was actually upset this morning when my ship's pilot bit the dust during combat. Losing a level 5 officer blows a mile wide hole in your ship's effectiveness, that's for sure.

johndramey - you might have heard Cory moaning some bloody murder around the forum in the last month. It always happens on the loss of a good officer. A Ship's doctor will get better at preventing a few of these deaths, but when a ship takes a real beating in combat, it hurts!

fallen, yeah, I'm starting to think about getting a doctor ASAP. I spend so much cash on keeping my crew healthy, it might be worthwhile to have a doctor in the ranks. I've been trying to keep a pilot/navigator, a gunner/technician, a soldier type, and a merchant as my officers. Might be better to just get rid of the soldier or gunner and get a doc instead when I'm not dealing with a combat focused game.

She had the Soldier and Pain Tolerant traits which are great for a combat specialist but I made her second job Doctor and gave her the Medical Staff talent and placed her in On Station status.

I don't think we'll have map templates, the design engine for maps and characters are so radically different.
I get the idea that maybe you'd say some stored values like 19-4-24-1 but that's such a minimalist template and the variance on generation so great i cannot really see value there.
But I super duper get sharing maps, and sharing Captain templates.

Nice build, reinforced by Traits! May she do well. I am curious why you placed her On Station tho. That allows her ship operation skills (pilot, electronics) to help power the ship, and keeps her out of boarding engagements. Maybe you want On Patrol? Doctor talents and skills can still be used from patrol.
