1.) I have a Mass Dampner(1) which is described as -150 Mass. Does this mean even though the ships mass doesn't change. The Dampner will reduce it by 150. In other words
Your ship can now hold an extra 150 mass worth of components.
2.) Do Dampners Stack. I'm considering getting rid of my Archangle weapon and replacing it with a Mass Dampner(2) that has -300 mass. D1(-150) + D2(-300) = -450 mass?
If they stack I now another 450 Mass I can use to install more components?
Is there anything else I should know about the pros, and cons of Dampners?

I think the answer is yes, and yes. The other thing to know is that they can be upgraded, so toss the 1 and replace it with a better one.

One thing to be wary of when using Mass Dampers is that if they take more than 60% damage in ship combat they become ineffective, so all the mass they were 'hiding' now reappears. This could cause quite a bit of damage if your 'gross' component mass is greater than the hull is designed to hold.

Not to mention getting too heavy to make a hyperwarp jump. I am not sure if that is in the game already, but it has been promised...

I was hoping somewhere down the road we would be allowed to jettison some components. The small ones, or if one of the cargo bay is externally mounted, I visualize some sort of common detachment ability. Visualize a tanker leaving a cargo pod in space for another ship to pick up. Just kicking it around. I guess as it is now you would land at the nearest planet replace/repair the ship to proceed, that doesn't sound so bad, kind of makes sense. If you get into combat before you can reach a spaceport I guess your going to be using all weak dice. |

I often run multiple Mass Dampners and have yet to have an issue with them causing extra damage to rest of ship because they've gotten damaged.
I try to stay on top of maintenance and repair every time I make port with shipyard that can provide it. If you can't afford routine maintenance in a regular ongoing manner then I'd say you have other more troublesome issues to concern yourself with than installation and risks of multiple Mass Dampeners.

I cannot confirm them causing damage due to failure either; I was recycling a comment made by bookworm21 in another thread about how a failure could cause a damage chain reaction? |

The conversation about extra damage is that if you take a hit to a deck that has a Mass Dampener, and that Mass Dampener is selected to be one of the damaged components, that damage can snowball into nearby components and cause extra damage. This is only about ship combat.

Bigger ships and bigger crews are a double-edged sword. They cost a lot more Credits. That's why I don't like starting out with the best ships atm. It takes too much money starting out. But once I start rolling, and upgrading ship components, I notice the need for a bigger ship, because I need more mass for more stuff on board. |

Yeah, I tried out one of the 7000 mass starter ships, and damn, the upkeep cost is high. The captain went bankrupt rather quickly. Of course, that was when I was still learning, so that may have been a factor...

And last I heard, John Robinson was still flying around in a Juror, so his problem really most likely is 'I have outgrown this ship but for the time being I cannot buy a new one'. |
