Darn you clever game designers forcing me to make meaningful decisions! ;-)

Will there ever be an option to created a balanced captain with all C's? I'd like to do that, but the current UI suggests I never will. Actually, that sounds like a cool idea. Especially good for newbies since they won't understand too much about the true cost of tradeoffs yet. Having an "Average Captain" might be a good way to learn the game mechanics before delving into character customization.

Sticking with the design that we proposed and advertised in the Kickstarter!

I do agree with the idea of an "Average Captain", with a pre-generated template that is created for a good starting build for early game survivability, maybe as a Merchant or Star Trader.

I think this could be done while still using the current ABCDE system. Maybe just have a few preset Templates as Brutus suggested? Not needed right now though. Something for further down the road of development.

Yes, the game will feature a bevy of Templates on launch. You'll be able to reach the map and be playing in less than 10 clicks.

In fact, we really hope to source the Templates from y'all

Cool! Echoing Brutus, I've been thinking of a starter Merchant template that would allow you to try out a bit of spying, exploring and patrolling on Average difficulty. A good way to get to know various game mechanics.
Maybe a 'Quick Start' button that takes you to a screen with a few completely spec'd games. Captain, map, faction and difficulty are all set, just click one and start playing. That'd minimize clicks and decisions for new players. In fact, I bet a subset of players would love that option and never get into deep customization--i'm thinking of midcore players.

Darn you clever game designers forcing me to make meaningful decisions! ;-) yah, I've been putting contacts at the bottom and starting just with a Prince, looks like I'll have to revisit that strategy down the road. But, once we are able to upgrade to different ships, I might move my starting ship lower than B as well.
