Ok, finally got this done. It was pretty fun. Not as involved as I was expecting, but if there are going to be lots of littler stories then that is probably a good thing. I hope that as the game matures there will always be room to add another story to the world somehow.
Doing it forced me out of my comfort zone because I wasn't set up for exploring but Elsa did a good job making up for what I lacked. I actually don't even have any combat crew so I opted not to go for that last extra relic in the xeno pit. For the pirate captain I went and recruited some green Alta soldier and pistoleers on the nearest planet and installed a level 4 weapon locker. I surprised to see that they managed on the first try. I thought I might have to drain all the local worlds until I manage to squeek out a win.
Compensation at the end was good. I didn't think of this until now, but could I have kept the sword instead? I never looked at it or it's stats. That would be pretty fun. Maybe have it be relic that would give +X intimidate or a special trait like extra rep with every contact I visit, but would see Miresh put a bounty on my head and Elsa dump me.
Only potential problem, which I mentioned before is that I needed a good cushion of cash to accomplish the mission. I swapped out my passenger cabin for another officer bunk and put in the #4 weapon locker and generally spent 20-30k on top of that after all was said and done. I do have a few caches to go empty though. Gonna have to see if I can get into a Black Market to hock some xeno artifacts.
Overall fun. I sort of like the idea of lots of little stories.

Oh and one little bug. It tells me, at the end, that I'm gaining rep with Rychart not De Valmart.
-and I'll have to see if I have any missions time left, but maybe tomorrow I can go and feed my new recruits to the xeno and see if I can pull off a clean sweep. I mean they're just Alta Mesa.

contributor - yes, the game will be full of story arcs like this. We've got a number of others cooking. There will also be repeat characters (Zerod) who appear throughout different arcs at times, as well as large central arcs that are extended and revolving around a set of characters and your Captain. You could keep the sword, its a good one. Fixed the typo with Rychart => De Valtos Also, notched up the difficulty on the pirate fight.

Ha, I went back and fed my Alta Mesa recruits to the Xeno. It went about as expected and I wouldn't have bothered going back for a second attempt if I hadn't been locked out anyways.
So if we can keep the sword it would be fun to have some story repercussions. If we go back and talk to Rivesh maybe we could get the chance to keep or return the sword. Keeping would mean we lie to him, but that maybe he would find out and flag us and send more bounties after us.
I like the idea of having enemies in this game just about as much as I like having friends.

I like the idea of having enemies in this game just about as much as I like having friends. Same here. I am really happy that we redesigned "Wanted" to be for a single Contact, rather than an entire class of Factions. Much, much more granular. From the least granular value we had, to the most. Big change.

Really enjoyed the story arc.
The 4x card game wins was a little monotonous, but the story interaction in-between helped. Kept the sword, gave back the sextant. Captain is back in space to go explore again. :-)
Off to go see a spice trader to try that one out!

I had felt that way during play testing, but it just didn't click. I've reduced this to 3 and improved the dialog a bit between each.

Ah, went back to check my game settings and I didn’t have the retired explorer as part of my starting contacts....
Just wanted to let you know it was organically generated by the game.... but had remembered his name from the forum discussions. Very cool! (I’m sure this is what you planned/coded, just confirming it worked!)

Did it again. This time I found myself wishing that I could take one of my officers who is much more integral to my build and leave them temporarily on the planet, until I can come back and dumped Elsa. I really liked the folks I had so having to give one up just to do the story was a drag. I probably would have skipped it actually if I wasn't try to test stuff. So if possible it would be cool to have one of my officers just wait for me until I can get back, free up an officers quarter and take them back on.

You could always trade a small component like a passenger cabin for an officer cabin for the duration of the mission, then swap back when you're done. A quick check finds that pasenger->officer would only cost $2,500 and 4 days with my current ship/captain/crew. Probably the same for most players, since it's under the $5,000 limit for getting discounts via talents. Swapping a officer cabin for passenger is $2,500 and 3 days. So the whole thing would just cost $5,000 and 7 days. You're probably not going to be carrying any passengers while you're handling the storyline.

But there is a limit on how many total officers you can have. So once you're there another officer cabin doesn't help you.

I did not know that. I thought it was just limited by the number of officer cabins you had. But I was just making that assumption, so I may well be wrong.
