I was able to complete this after 2 previous failures in previous games. I was doing missions to build rep with her, and simply ran out of time (the missions were pretty far from her, so Nikolai left by the time I was able to fulfill a couple of missions)
[SPOILERS BELOW]
I really liked having multiple ways to solve the problem of Nikolai (bounty hunter or Prince)
It was fairly short for me using a pretty cool strategy. On meeting first contact, I had 23 intel records, so sold them to her; it gave me 99 effective rep with her on the spot, and was able to go through the dialog and meet Nikolai right away. I chose to negotiate with the Prince (had over 300K credits helped too), and solved the problem.
Since I'm a Merchant/Spy really didn't need to bring him on board for merchant or repair skills.
I really like these stories being injected into the world of ST:F, it keeps the game fresh (especially by late game, because they are something 'different' vs. just looking for XENO or whatnot). I know it takes a lot of time to work on storylines, but it really does add so much to the game, the immersion. Bravo Andrew!

MintDragon - thank you for the encouragement. There are bigger ones, smaller ones, and some really long ones all in the works. This game will be crawling with story like xeno on Mok Prime.

A big thanks to bobc for a suggestion about how to handle escaping Zerod. Story just got a lot more cool and the lasting repercussions more epic. Careful -- Bounty Hunters don't give up easily. Spoiler - anyone end up facing Aaron Zen?

I failed three times on Impossible. The reason is lack of money, leading to lack of time. Tuemette's missions don't pay for themselves, if I can even accomplish them (I'm heavily into trade and diplomacy, at the expense of offensive power), so I need to take on other missions and take the time to trade just to just maintain my ship and keep my crew healthy and happy. Last time, when I presented myself to her compound, I had more than 30k credits, but to my surprise it wasn't enough; I lost nearly everything trying to fulfill her missions. I was one mission short from building enough rep when I learned Nik had left. If I try again, I'll look into rep-increasing talents (aside from the Doctor's, which I already use to great effect; but I needed at least one level 8 doctor before I could start the rep engine). However, I do play on Impossible, so that's fine if I fail. It would be more interesting to hear from people playing on Normal. I was able to complete this after 2 previous failures in previous games. I was doing missions to build rep with her, and simply ran out of time (the missions were pretty far from her, so Nikolai left by the time I was able to fulfill a couple of missions) Which difficulty are you playing on? On Normal, having to read spoilers or restart the game shouldn't be required to fulfill this storyline.

We will keep working on balance and content difficulty rate, but we do not expect or plan to aim for 100% success rate on any metric.

I think we've mentioned it a few times now. These stories will NOT be available on Turn 1 of the game.
They are injected into the alpha builds to make testing easy.

OK, got this one finished. It was pretty good. The choices made me think a bit. I didn't want to risk the fight since I haven't improved my ship much yet. So I went with the negotiate option. I already had a merchant officer that I really liked so I was tempted to sell out johndramey, but decided for now just to play nice and see how things went. In the end he's pretty good, but he cost me 76k (what I paid plus what I could have gained). I don't know if he's worth that much. Would I have gotten a bunch of rep with Rychart for betraying him? That would have helped me a lot too...hmmm? It's wicked, but I might have to try that next time. I would love to see Tumette's reaction after I buttered her up with "Anything for you Tumette." That line actually felt a bit syrupy to me, considering I didn't really feel all that attached to her. I guess we're bffs for life now.

On Normal, having to read spoilers or restart the game shouldn't be required to fulfill this storyline. A. I'm playing on HARD mode. B. Eh, with the current mechanics I believe: 1. you are given a heads up when initially landing on a planet that the contact(s) are special (and some story behind it) 2. the 'clock' won't start til you interact with said contact(s). So you can come back later. 3. attempting the contact and failing, then using your noodle on an alternate way to complete the mission is part of the fun (for puzzle-solving folks) 4. the game as a whole is part puzzle-solving (what can I do on my next run to do better, given my accumulated knowledge); and I view the storline arcs as part of that knowledge, especially the ones I DO know how to complete. So it's perfectly fine in my world to not be able to resolve all storylines on a given run, especially with some of the ones cooking that have positive/negative implications depending on one's decisions/success. (ex. becoming the hunted by Zorad) I admit I might be a bit of an outlier having cut my teeth on 'Collosal Cave/Zork' in the late 70's, which was pre HTML web, a constantly updating game, and no one to consult other than usenet friends that were banging their heads on puzzles they came across. (side note: carry the glass of water in your limited inventory and DON'T drink it!)

Oh, I tried the double-cross Nikolai option, the other day. It made me feel rather terrible about myself, but other than that I was rather pleased with the outcomes. I thought we might be punished more severely (and who knows what we will miss out on when the story is more complete), but it wasn't that bad. I needed rep with Rychart and money and I didn't need Tuemette or a merchant officer. So it was just business, you know.

Most of the storylines will include morality choices or options to break your promises. As a storywriter, I am not the morality police, so don't expect a big bad penalty for betraying someone like that. That's on your soul, as the Steel Song might say. STF welcomes all comers, from the blackhearted pirate to the honorable military officer.

And my soul feels substantially lessened by the experience.
Thank you very much.

Lol just you wait.
In this case, it was the "easy money" choice that was quickly accessible via a low morality choice.

Couple of releases ago I found this smuggler, but didn't do the story line.
Now I can't remember her name or faction any hints?
