We won't do a hand holding tutorial.
There will be a story arc that is presented right at the start of the game which has some easy starter missions but is also something you can happily walk away from.
The Consult button is now functioning, so try it out and give feedback!

The next build has the basics in for most screens, with consult officers pointing out and explaining things like mini-games, the alerts in your notification bar, your Skill Pools in Status, why you would Patrol or Blockade, etc. On Android, I see the consult button in various screens. When I press it, I get my captain's portrait saying something like "You've asked for help on the quadrant", or "you've asked for help on a card game", but when I tap to advance it just gets me back to whatever screen I was originally on. I was assuming the button was just implemented as a placeholder without having the consultation functionality implemented yet, but reading through this thread makes it sound like you expect it to actually provide info. So I thought I ought to mention it. Version 1.3.31 on a Nexus 5X running Android 8.0.0.

khearn - the important thing is to upgrade to 1.3.33 and then you can see the button working Does not require a reinstall.

Ah yes, after updating to 1.3.35 (I seem to have skipped 33), I now get nice consultations from my officers on the sector map and status screen. Very nice, and covering lots of different UI bits. You guys don't waste any time. From other screens (orbit, zone, shipyard, exchange), I'm getting a new placeholder text "The Consult button will an explanation of this screen...". I think it's missing something between "will" and "an". Then again, it's placeholder text, so it might not be worth fixing.

Yep, we've got a lot of work to do, including rolling this Consult button into combat screens.
Fixed the typo anyway!

After much drama in my personal life, i've finally got the 1.3.35 loaded and started a game. Wow! it looks great! The contextual help is very cool.
For the first time player, with no STRPG experience there are a few super basic things they need to be told very early.
You have to earn money to keep your ship and crew functioning. Early in the game, while you're inexperienced doing low risk missions received from your contacts and a bit of trading is the safest way to do this.
I see crew/officers popping up at the bottom of the screen periodically providing toasts--I miss about 60% of these because they disappear too quickly. My small screen--Nexus 5X--makes the font small and doesn't help. Still leaving the toast up just a bit longer would be good.
The scrolling notifications screen is working really well on my Nexus 5X--small screen.
I wonder if notifications could be changed to help the first timer understand the consequences of various checks. Something like... --You failed a medical check and crew were injured. --You failed a repair check and ship was damaged. This might help a new player connect the dots between the checks and actions they need to take, while not being too prescriptive.

tenbsmith - thanks for the feedback! Highly appreciated. The notifications are going to be switched over to using story language (Electrical fire, ship damaged [Failed Repair Test] -- or something like that). We've got a huge list of Consult items to add, it will take a while to get to critical mass, but hopefully we can provide enough information to help new players move forward without forcing anything on them
