Playing a mix and match game to build up part of the Motivation Engine. I know you all will have some cool ideas. Here is what we need -- take any one trait from this list: startraders.gamepedia.com/Traits and match it up to another. You can pick up to three result traits for each trait. For Example: Hyperwarp SicknessHyperwarp Sickness -> Flashbacks Hyperwarp Sickness -> Malcontent Hyperwarp Sickness -> Earthbound Friends These will be used to build mutation arrays -- so if you have a Crew with Hyperwarp Sickness, they are more likely to develop Flashbacks / Malconent when getting shot up in battle or Earthbound Friends when getting paid or hitting the spice plate a bit too hard with the locals after being ill in hyperwarp for weeks.

P.s. I'd fix the WIKI so that there would be no more NOT IMPLEMENTED traits, but its all locked in read-only mode.

I have a couple questions about trait mutations so I can make better suggestions 1) Are some traits only found on new crew/officers, and can't be mutated to? 2) fallen, you have mentioned before that only Alta Mesa crew can have the spatial trait. Will faction-specific traits like Spatial be acquirable by anyone through mutation? Or will only Alta Mesa crew members be able to mutate into it?

Hmm ... looking at the list, it's easy to see how some traits will invariably lead to others ... but I was thinking you'd also want to consider encounters/events that would cause traits to appear or disappear ...
Wounded in combat --> Positive Survivor Rugged
Wounded in combat --> Negative Spice Addict Battle Scarred Combat Nerves Crippled
Mutiny event --> Positive Loyal Reveres Authority Brave
OR Mutiny event --> Negative Ill-Tempered Malcontent Skeptic
But in the vein of the original topic Crippled --> Flashbacks Crippled --> Worldsick Crippled --> Frail
Ex Military --> Flashbacks Ex Military --> Battle Scarred Ex Military --> Hates [faction] (where faction could be random including home faction)
Vulture --> Klepto Vulture --> Observant Vulture --> Scavenger
Finally, what about if you gain traits, they naturally deprecate other traits. For example - if you gain the trait "Brave", you naturally deprecate "Combat Nerves"

Device Freak --> Klepto Device Freak --> Scavenger Device Freak --> Obsessive
Problem Solver --> Calculating Problem Solver --> Spatial Problem Solver --> Concentration
Cat --> Hates Steel Song Cat --> Merciless Cat --> Obsessive

I was also wondering if there is some deeper logic to trait mutation. Is there a sense that trait mutation tends to push from a lower to a higher meta-score? Or is it possible that traits will sort of recycle around, such as Greedy > Klepto > Sly > Greedy. Also what kind of events will cause mutations outside of combat. Having some idea about those might help give better suggestions.
Also it seems like some traits have to be generated independently of prior traits. Especially those that relate to combat and death. Some one could go from acrobatic to crippled, or greedy to acid burnt. The latter aren't necessarily related to the former, but come rather from overwhelming exterior experiences.

contributor - all sorts of activities (Spying, Spicing, Exploring, Sailing, Fighting, Missions) have low % chances to cause trait mutations. If you Explorer 1,000 times, you'll have a crew who have been shaped by your actions.

So the engine will be tuned to know that Trait1 A + Activity X may yield Trait2 AX. Whereas Trait1 A + Activity Y may yield Trait2 AY?

contributor - more that, each of these factors will add to the table of possibilities for a trait mutation. Activity X will bring some of its own possibilities, crossed with Trait A and Trait B. Perhaps, because you have Trait B, some of the possibilities offered by Activity X will be removed and because you're Faction C, these two other possibilities will be added. While the prompt Cory Trese posted may make it feel like we're building a flow from Trait X > Trait Y, we're looking for well-matched possibilities, not guaranteed flow of trait to trait. "If you are a Snob, you are likely to become greedy" or "If you survive a lethal blow, you are likely to become rugged or scarred". These possibilities will be crossed with other factors to determine a final mutation.

Sounds really cool and really deep. Awesome! My favorite party is the "Activity X" thing. Coming back to that KickStarter promise of building a realistic cast of characters around you. If you blockade enough, loot and destroy enough enemy ships, you're boat is going to be full of merciless cutthroats
