We'd love any feedback anyone wants to share about appearance of story in the 1.3.55 build. Timing, placement, pacing, challenge level, too early, too late?.

I had the Hunna Collective raid a starport as I landed - I presume this was intentional?
I fought them off and killed their agents, but haven't seen any larger impact yet.

Yes, it is intentional that story snippet can now be injected into games. Aside from the immediate impact (Mil Commander contact, rep change) there aren't any larger impacts to that choice. Stories will vary in length from very short (one event) to very long (eras).

Curious if anyone has encountered the Nikolai or Elsa storyline.

Stories will vary in length from very short (one event) to very long (eras). Just saying I really appreciated that event, I thought it made the game world feel alive and dynamic. I hope you'll really build on it and add more 'random' (i.e. low probability, not clearly caused by traits/location) events, especially story-linked ones, that that take you outside normal gameplay patterns (chance encounters while you visit the spice hall, or perhaps coming across a band of traders while exploring and being able to buy/sell).

Here is some story feedback now that I've come across a few more examples of it. There will be spoilers below obviously.
HUNNA ATTACK
The Hunna Collective attack on a station was very fun to play through. I liked that I had an immediate choice to make and that there was also an option to 'opt out.' The first time this happened on my first playthrough, I had missed the Hunna mention entirely from the Arbiter and did not know who they were, so the choice to help them or not was ambiguous. On subsequent playthroughs, the event had more meaning because I understood more about who they were. I would suggest maybe providing more hints of their existence and who they are from the beginning.
Maybe you could use the quadrant news screen in the spice hall to show some more flavor news? Hunna Agents have Bombed Orbital Station X, Hunna Agents Release Statement Condemning Faction Decision Y, etc. Right now, I confess that I don't even read the station news as it is, so making that screen more compelling would be welcome. As captains, we go to the Spice Hall nearly every time we land to take care of our crew, so seeing something that stops us from mindlessly clicking all the pay buttons would go a long way.
CALAGAN FAEN
His dialog was great. I especially liked how quick he was to turn on the Arbiter as soon as he sensed that she would not be assisting him. I chose to follow his daughter's questline, so have not yet seen much beyond taking the Arbiter for her tour.
ZETTE FAEN
Again, the writing for her missions was very intriguing. You got the sense that she was a very different type of person from her brother, and I could not quite tell what her motivations were from what was currently available for her storyline. I did like the mission variety and the option to choose to either spy or just collect the obvious information. I also enjoyed the dialog between you and your officers as you investigate. Because your officers are auto-generated, it's fairly easy to just see them as a bunch of stats. I would love to see more of this interaction and maybe even a couple more scenes like the one at the beginning of your game where you consult with them about taking on the arbiter mission.
Zette's mission appeared to be currently incomplete, so I only got to the point where she said my evidence backed up her contact's information.
VALENCIA FAEN
I ran into a variety of issues with her. I've attempted her route on nearly every playthrough I've done and have not had success with any of them. On my first run, I completed only one of her missions before the Duel of Assassins started and then was asked to take her on board. I did and she and half my crew were killed during a bounty hunter attack soon after. Oops. I did appreciate that when she died, the game world continued and it was clear that I had not 'failed' the game, only that mission. However, I was told to inform her father what happened, but I was never able to speak to him at his court again, so this option never occurred.
The second time, I rushed her missions and I uncovered her Hunna contact. He then asked me to do a series of missions involving smuggling materials to exploration zones. This, I felt, went on too long without much variety. I would have liked him to ask me to complete a different type of mission for each step. Somewhere in the middle of these fetch missions, I had Valencia join my crew and this time we prevailed against the bounty hunters. As I continued her storyline, the contact had some interaction with her, which I appreciated. However, during the last step when the agent informed us that her brother was responsible for the bombing, she was in my crew but the Hunna acted as if she was not. He told me I should return to her and tell her at once.
Just after this happened, the game informed me that the Duel of Assassins was over and that I should return to Calagan's court. I did so and again was unable to speak with Calagan. He did not appear in his court area and had no dialog when you clicked on him as a regular contact. There didn't appear to be any way to let Valencia return to court, either, or speak to her regarding her brother. She ended up staying on my ship for 8+ years with no further interaction until my captain died and I started over.
The most recent time, I took her on board and did her missions to the point where it is suggested that she is being recruited by the Hunna. I was then told one more time that the Duel of Assassins was over. I returned to her father's court and this time had an event pop up where Valencia asked me what I was playing at. We were then attacked by assassins. After we defeated them, she told me that she no longer trusted me and had already found a new Star Trader to run with. She then left my ship and I never saw her again. I also never saw Calagan again, either. Zette and her brother never commented on the situation.
I could understand why she should would be upset by returning to her home when the Duel of Assassins was still ongoing, but once it has ended, the game tells you to return and I did not understand why doing that caused her to leave. I am assuming I ran into some sort of bug?
RUSS AXIELL
This was my favorite mission so far, and my favorite experience with the game yet. I have only ran across this mission in my most recent playthrough where I had been playing for quite some time (I think my captain was level 19). Everything from how we were told to seek him out through a rumor, to gaining his trust, to following through on the mission was fantastic to play. The writing was great and Russ's plan to free his friend was actually very clever. I also liked that it did not pit us against some evil, generic 'bad guy,' but instead a prison warden who was both fair and just and refused to torture her prisoners. By the time the moment came where we had to decide how to complete the mission, I was having an absolute blast. Getting to make that choice felt great and I could see how I might go different routes depending on my build.
I loved everything about this quest and it worked flawlessly. It was challenging even at my high level and also injected some more interest into my run just as I had been getting a little bored with it.
OTHERS
I hear there are other missions like the ones above available, but have not yet run into them. I'm looking forward to uncovering more, especially if they are similar to Russ's storyline.

captaincrunch - big thanks for all your compliments! Been reading over this thread for a while and really glad you've enjoyed the story so much. There are 2 other storylines (De Rivesh Legacy and Trapped Merchant) that you haven't listed, but you'll find them eventually. And more will be added! I hope you will leave a review on the game!
