I found that missions that require that you destroy a ship that might flee are seldom successful, at least on Impossible. I've just tried with a captain, ten times attacked a ship (for missions, by blockading, or by attacking ships crossing my path), used the Targeting Lock talent and (if there was even a second round) the Sharp Steering talent, and ten times out of ten the ship escaped anyway. Then, no money left. Goodbye, captain: piracy doesn't pay!

Sorry to hear it. If your ship and crew aren't tuned for long range ship combat and closing fast then you might want to avoid these missions? Are you advancing as well as using these abilities? If you are sitting at range 5 and fighting, you are gambling with a loss. A great way to guarantee they can't escape is to get one copy of Twitch Surge.

Sorry to hear it. If your ship and crew aren't tuned for long range ship combat and closing fast then you might want to avoid these missions? Er, I'd created a new captain optimized for that purpose. Are you advancing as well as using these abilities? Yup. A great way to guarantee they can't escape is to get one copy of Twitch Surge. It's a level 5 talent. When I finally gave up, being creditless, I was in my second year already, and none of my pilots was yet level 5 (starting with "Experience" as my second highest priority after "Ship").

Ok -- sounds rough. Maybe avoid the missions until you have a better trained crew? Not a problem we're hearing from any other Captain, so I will keep an eye on it.

Maybe I just suffered from serial bad luck. It happens. It wasn't just missions, though: I blockaded and seized every on-route opportunity I was offered, as I was trying to win ten ship fights within two years. (Except for missions, I was preying on merchants and smugglers, of course; fighting heavily armed ships for little reward would have meant endgame for lack of credits even if I won.)

To close quickly, you want a high Speed engine, a lot of Navigation Strong Dice, and Twitch Surge.
As for levels, I typically run the Faen passenger missions until I have the credits and XP for upgrades, especially on Impossible.

I agree that these missions should be avoided for awhile and since the player is often able to escape it should be possible for the enemy to escape often.
As a tactic, I would add that successful boarding seems to keep a ship from escaping. So if you're doing those missions you should have a few Bounty Hunters to give you Blood Game.

As I said, I believe, "I was trying to win ten ship fights within two years" -- that's for the Steam achievements. If all I want is to survive and thrive, I can easily do so, as my ranking shows. I agree that these missions should be avoided for awhile and it since the player is often able to escape it should be possible for the enemy to escape often. As I tactic, I would add the successful boarding seems to keep a ship from escaping. So if you're doing those missions you should have a few Bounty Hunters to give you Blood Game. I gave one level of BH to my captain and all the officers just for that talent. I used it during one of the missions. Boarding failed; prey got away.

Sinocelt, for that I would recommend blockading, or potentially patrolling. You probably can't afford the time spent traveling, if you want to get 10 in 2 years. Get lots of Pirates! EDIT: Actually where are you seeing the reward for 10 in 2 years? I see an award for 10, but time is not listed.

As I said, I did blockade. My captain was a pirate and all my officers had one pirate level. Each time I got a merchant, the merchant just slipped away. Sometimes after damaging my ship, so I had to spend some time on missions to earn the money to repair it. EDIT: Actually where are you seeing the reward for 10 in 2 years? I see an award for 10, but time is not listed. First Blood
Defeat 10 enemy ships in battle in the first two years on Difficulty Hard or higher. Press Gang
Conscript 20 enemy crew into service in the first two years on Difficulty Hard or higher.

Hmmm, we have very different experiences then. Actually I guess I was playing on Hard, just to get the awards. So maybe that makes all the difference.

I missed first blood because the icon is off. I see it now. I got it on hard, maybe just try that?
I haven't manage Press Gang yet.

If that's indeed where the difference lays, then I'm at fault for refusing to play below Impossible. For the Steam achievements, choosing your difficulty is part of planing your strategy, I can't deny it. Judging from the descriptions of the different difficulty levels, I thought a higher difficulty would make fights more deadly, not the prey more slippery, but I don't know everything that happens "below the hood." [Edit:] I tried again on Impossible, this time with the Scout Cutter, a faster ship, but the result was the same: three times in a row the enemy escaped, even when I used Targeting Lock or Sharp Steering. On the other hand, I was attacked by a pirate and didn't manage to escape in three turns with Sharp Steering (I didn't have Fast Getaway, this time), even though my opponent never made a movement.

I was using the Guardian Interceptor on Hard and only had a few ships escape. I would generally try to get to range 4 and pummel from there. That gave me a little margin of error if they managed to change range on me. I have to say that for these unlocks though I know it's something of a matter of chance and I might have to burn through a few captains before I get the stars to align in my favor.
