BF does not punish a Templar/Xeno for moving by an enemy unit. What I am trying to say is: when a unit takes a path of movement leading through a tile neighbouring an enemy unit, the enemy unit does not get a chance to attack the unit moving by.
Seems somewhat unrealistic to me and would feel more authentic, if there was a chance that a moving unit gets hit by an enemy unit sitting on a tile directly next to a tile on the path of the moving unit. Could apply only to units with any melee attack ability and not, if a moving unit is passing through a tile within firing range of a unit with a ranged attack ability. Or maybe both? Would be the most realistic setting, in my opinion. You just don't get to move close to or by an enemy unit within the enemy's attack range, without risiking to get hit on the move. Of course, this would make displaying enemies movement ranges (in some way), obligatory.
Could be a setting in game options, for players to choose a preferred behaviour.
Any thoughts?

These sounds like attacks of opportunity from D&D to me. I think this would massively change the game to be much, much harder. It is rare that a Xeno ignores the closest threat. It is much more common that a templar would need to pass by a Xeno without attacking it. Making this a gameplay option would be better than mandatory but this would be a pretty dramatic shift form the game.
That said, supposing there were a UI element showing when single-clicked "proposed" paths would endanger movement, this could be interesting. I'd personally prefer it if only certain Xeno/Narvidians had this behavior -- new units. It could be their defining feature. Perhaps you'd have a Narv that did only moderate damage but had excellent defenses and took a swipe at any Templar that tried to squeeze past it!
I suspect the programming involved would keep this from being a feature any time soon. It is hard to expect the brothers to invest heavily in a game that is likely not a primary future revenue source for them.

Only Overwatch interrupts movement. There are no other "attacks of opportunity" to use the term from D&D.

drspendlove : Yes, you name it right. Attacks of opportunity. Thanks for finding the baby a name. True, I agree on what you said. And of course, better optional than mandatory. But most important, it would be a huge effort to implement it and no cash no programming. Maybe, the Brothers have thoughts about a "Templar Battleforce II". I wish they would. fallen : We know, that's how it is by now. So, when you get bored you'll have something to think about. ;-)

I'm just waiting for them to give me the source code and let me go wild.
