Oh and Gene Wolfe. Shadow of the Torturer, and sequels. Brilliant. Great suggestions tay and Lord Gansai -- added this to my list.

I'm digging up this old thread to say I just finished reading Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard. That author is perhaps more well known as the founder of Scientology, and I've heard there was an extremely awful movie adaptation of the book. I wouldn't blame anyone if they assume it's not worth reading because of that stuff, but I highly recommend it. It is an epic science fiction novel, comparable to Dune in some ways. Some other great works I've read recently are The Mote in God's Eye, Neuromancer, and Snow Crash. The former was mostly intriguing because of its focus on how different to us an alien civilization can be. The latter two were mentioned by LordofSyn on Discord a while back as recommended reading for the cyberpunk genre in anticipation of CKF; I'm glad to have read them to understand the genre better, and I enjoyed them even though I'm more a space opera guy than a cyberpunk guy.

OMG I remember reading Neuromancer when it was cutting edge new sci-fi, now it's a classic. I feel really old!
