I keep getting disappointed, and the wiki doesn't have the information I'm looking for.
There are three effective types of ship slots.
Base ship slots. [Large, Medium, Small] Equivalent ship slots. [The number of slots in relation to one another and their quality. 8 large and 6 medium is better than 6 large and 8 medium.] Effective ship slots. [The number taken up or not taken up by mass dampeners.]
There are ratings on the wiki for the first two categories, but not the third one.
I bought the Pallas Freighter because, for the price, it had a really solid ratio of large and medium slots for my needs.
Problem! Two medium slots are wasted on mass dampeners, and two small slots, too!
I've had some ships where only 1-2 slots are used for these mass dampeners, while others have 4. I don't, frankly, see the point in having so many slots be devoured by MD's, but whatever. Is there a list of ships rating them on their effective slots and quality?

Sorry you're being so disappointed. You can check the wiki to see if a ship has mass dampeners -- just check out their component block.

Effective ship slots is something you can do a little work yourself to figure it out. I have a notebook filled with large medium small slots. Your three main ship components (engine, jump, bridge), barracks (mid sized) and some of the mass reducing components decrease the count of the total number of slots. Then from there you count up all your customizable slots.
Now, as far as the mass dampeners being wasted, you have to remember that the entire ship must fall into the total mass categories. 7000, 3400, 5000, whatever. When they are creating ships, you can't just add slots willy nilly. each slot has to have something in it and it weighs something. But what you can do is add a slot for a component and then add another slot for a mass reduction component. And it is important for YOU to remember that a high tier (3 or 4) mass reduction component might just be able to do in one slot that normally take three lessers. That's freeing up 1 or 2 right there. ALSO, high tier mass subtractors also have a great impact on your navigation and electronics dice pools
You are little misinformed about equivalent ship slots. There are plenty of components that only fit in certain slots or operate on different rules. Large cargo bays have both cargo and fuel and many different tiers depending on how much you want to spend. While medium cargo bays have 3 different types- One only cargo, one only fuel and a combo cargo & fuel that only has one tier. Completely different system.
But to give you the answer I think you want
