So I do not know if this is a bug or expected behaviour.
Ship fight at range 5 I have 2 enem small craft on m side I fire 4 autocannons to defend against the small craft after the first two are fired the first craft explodes. theoretically there are two more guns which could fire at the other craft but they do not.

I will take a look at reproducing the scenario, but I believe this is correct. All craft targeting occurs before the turn starts. Those two autocannons did fire into the ball of debris that was the first craft, we just didn't animate it.
... I am fixing this for the next update. It's very unfair to anyone firing guns.

So when you do that you might probably have a look at the target prioritisation. I think at the moment the guns fire at the craft in the order they where started. Instead I would suggest a logic that prioritises targets to give the best protection to the ship. My suggestion would be.
- Prioritise Crafts with offensive flight plans over craft with defensive flight plans (if the range is 1 Autoguns could fire at defending interdictors I would give these the lowest priority) -- Prioritise Incomming Craft over Retreating Craft (Craft that have already attacked and are flying back to their mothership are no immenent threat and have low priority) --- Prioritise Close ships over distant ships (if we are at range 1 a cannon could shoot at both halves of the screen. The craft which are going to attack this turn should have higher priority over the ships that just started and will attack next turn) ---- Priorities Bombers over Shuttles over Interdictors (From the most dangerous to the least dangerous) ----- Priioritise Craft that are easier to hit over craft that are harder to hit (dealing damage is better than missing) ------ Prioritise the ship with the loest HP (what's dead is dead and will not rise again)

cerseisadvocate - thanks for the suggestion! The ordering is not related to order of launch but type of craft -- Interdictor, Shuttle, Bomber. This ordering is to the benefit of the craft who have the ability to cover for each other.

There seems to be a new bug with the newest change
Ship combat at range 5 one enemy small craft is on my side another one is on the side of the enemy ship Ifire several range 1 autoguns in defense against small craft. the first one hits and destroys the small craft on my side. After that the other guns fire at the small craft that are near the enemy ship.
