After all this time, I still can't figure out what determines who is affected by the outcome of a contract you complete. For example, I had a contract that took me into Independant space to meet up with some contacts. Finished the contract and checked faction standing to see my rep with Cadar was suddenly in the negative(wasn't before this).
On that note, I've also had the game tell me that my crew doesn't like working against the Independants. How am I working against them in any way when I meet up with a contact to drop off goods or passengers?
Sorry for the questions Cory. It's been bugging me for ages, and I don't really understand the why(or how).

Contracts aren't always against who they say they are. If you get a political officer you'll be notified after the contract is completed, something along the lines of "those were actually cadar agents in disguise".
You'll lose rep with whatever faction the contract is against. You're working against them because the package will contain illegal goods, the passengers are wanted criminals, or the message contains intelligence against that faction, and so on. If the contract is genuinely against independents, you'll lose morale instead.

See, I thought about all that, and I have seen the message from the political officer before. The thing is, I've noticed a loss in faction rep without seeing that(when I do have a political officer; can't comment about the times I did not).

Sure you didn't ignore any warships/bounty hunters who wanted to search your ship? Also, I don't know if the political officer will notify you 100% of the time, although that's what I thought happened.

Pretty sure I had a contract last night that I took from a faction palace, which in the end, was somehow against the same faction who gave the contract, and I actually lost rep for it. Sneaky bastards!

Sneaky bastards! Yeah, that can happen. Also, watch out for alliances, they can also result in rep loss with the faction that gave you the contract. |

Also, remove the folowing code from the game (it's happened like 3 times today!): If(ship=OutOfFuel AND cargo>90%_TradePermitGoods);

The contract was against De Valtos, not independents (yes, they can give contracts against themselves). The rep gain with DV for completing the contract was bigger than that lost. The alliances result in rep and rank loss with rychart and cadar. |

It's a wonderfully complicated game, I'll say that. I wonder how long the Brothers spent in just working up the way this stuff functions, because it had to take a LOT of planning and tinkering. Most PC and console games don't put this much thought into the entire experience.
Still, I shake my fist at times while trying to earn my unlocks on Demanding, because it's darn hard to get to +rep with all factions when the stars align against you, and contracts from your own faction end up giving -rep! Not a complaint, since you can't make every faction happy every time, just an observation. One has to fall to one side or the other when trying to ride the fence.

A tip of the hat to you, good sir. For me, the fact that I felt compelled to purchase ST is proof enough to me that it (and you, as the dev) is in an elite class compared to the other 99.9% of apps/games out there.
I'm contemplating taking on CK here soon, as I absolutely loved the Shadowrun sourcebook-based RPG as a teenager. If the free version is anywhere near as fun as pen and paper was, I'll definitely be buying CK Elite as well.

My last 27 straight contracts (a mixture of destroy criminal, deliver package, people and messages) have ALL been for people in disguise leading to reputation loss. Grrr!
I know it's a neat feature that adds depth, but surely the probability of a contract being from an enemy spy should be less than 0.995, at least until you get to the harder levels for people who like suffering ("Crazy" "Insane" "Impossible" and "Your Phone Will Electrocute You If You Fail" <- coming in next Android SDK update)
EDIT: I'm currently on Challenging, I like surviving for at least a short while.

Are you singling out contracts vs. Independents? If not then there is *another* bug in ST.
As I understand the code I'm checking, contracts vs. Independents are the only ones trigger that rule.
However, I can't see anyone dong 27 straight contracts vs. Independents. Let me know and I'll work on figuring this out as well.

Wait, now I'M confused. Are the people in discise the guys who are giving you the contract or receiving the contract? How does working against independence increase your chance that its someone in discise? And shouldn't the political officer be able to warn you its people in discise BEFORE you accept the contract?

Going to have to wait to hear back from phantombudgie about the Contracts he's talking about before I speculate on which rules are in play or not in play. The Political Officer cannot warn you -- not needed, in fact, the Captain himself can tell that the Contract is being sold as "against Independents" but they're rarely actually against Independents. Most everything in ST is driven on Faction v. Faction conflict and politics. |
