The Custom Difficulty Option in CK greatly increased the value and replay-ability of the game for me. I would love to see the same sort of feature in ST. I'd think that Achievements acquired in Custom could not grant unlocks (more because figuring out a balance way to set that up would be a nightmare), which is fine because custom is more for people who've already gotten a feel for the game. Things you could select: - Starting Kit (XP, Rep, credits, etc. as a single option)
- Threat Progression (How quickly the background "game level" increases)
- Enemy Captain Level
- Fuel Economy
- Galactic Economy (how friendly/aggressive base prices and contract payouts are)
- Alien Presence (how common alien encounters can be)
- Death (Toggle and possibly terms of Perma-death)
- Humor/Oddities Toggle (turn some of the weird fluff stuff on or off)
For example, I think it could be fun to do something like: Starting kit: Hard Threat Progression: Normal Enemy Captain Level: 120% (Hard) Fuel Economy: Challenging Galactic Economy: Hard Alien Presence: "This one goes to 11" (i.e. maximum aliens) Death: Perma-death On Oddities: Off (Mainly because I think I've seen them all by now) Just because it would be fun to have an Alien Hunting Safari for a game or two.

laughingman - unfortunately the ST architecture simply can't support custom difficulty. This is due to it being our first game and some limiting decisions were made that we didn't see the full consequences. We appreciate the suggestion, and have fielded it many times with ST. We too wish we could have custom difficulty, but that will have to wait for ST 2!

I figured that would be the case, as that seems to be the limiting factor with most issues (completely understandable, as it was your first release). Still had to ask.
Just out of curiosity, how big is the codebase for ST? From everything going on and the way it has grown, I can imagine how complex everything must have become by this point.

The codebase is about 4 megabytes of Java, C and SQL.

ST2 I'm definetly hoping this as a feature. Also, you should make a new ST2 thread/section so any ideas for ST2 could go there. If its too much work to add all the ST 2 ideas to it, I wouldn't mind helping

starfixer - we've built out the whole apparatus for custom difficulty. It is now something we will have in every game following, including ST2.
