I love this document. I think you do a good job of outlining why Merchant play requires focus.
I think another good argument against "dabbling" with Explorer is that it burns up LOTS of turns compared to the XP it generates.
XP generation in the Trade Exchange when using negotiation should be considerably larger (per turn) than Exploration. Then the merchant is splitting the XP they do earn and slowly falling behind in turns. As the game progresses the number of planets will available resources dwindles. The Captain needs more and more Explorer (consuming more turns, if gained using Exploration.)

I've just changed the permissions for that page to be viewable even without logging in. I haven't done it to all of the wiki guide pages because there is still a lot to do on it and so it's not complete enough to open up. Hopefully you'll be able to view this without needing shots or other treatments  |

Just read it now. Really good stuff there really explains a lot. Unfortunately I have never played merchant (who would want to go shopping when you have a SPACESHIP!!!) to help with theopen questions but I will keep them in mind.
Can't hardly wait to see the rest of it, it will save me a ton of time trying to filter forum searches through google.
