I dunno if such a thing has been dicussed in my year-long absense, but I think it's something to consider.
It could work something like this: Say you're a proud member of the Cadar. Then one day, you decide - for whatever insane and inexcusable reason - you'd rather join the Steel Song. Perform some task to join a different faction, and there you.
The upside would mostly be for role-playing purposes, with an added bonus of a decent rep jump with whatever faction you choose. The downside would be a major rep loss with your previous faction automatically into the negatives, and more bounty hunters from said faction show up more often than normal.
Perhaps giving the player the option to go independent would also work. It could be harder to gain faction rep, permits twice as costly, and military ships more likely to stop you. But, you could get more contracts and rumors and indie settlements, and like pirates not suffer morale loss when harassing fellow fringe worlders.
Just some ideas that popped up. Dunno if the game engine could even allow that. Thoughts/critiques/cold beers are welcomed.

Hey... My first post on here, been playing ST a while, difficult to know where to jump in lol.
Love the idea of playing as an independent tho, was thinking of of posting something like that as well.
I like the idea of smuggling banned products through the corporations lines. It would also be cool to have independent only missions along the lines of some diplomat/polititian/rich git wants a boatload of illegal products delivered to them without customs knowing... Etc

maurizi0 : welcome to the forum HateSolstice : welcome back I like the idea of being able to change faction during the course of the game. IMO it should be limited to only one change. Just my two cents though.

Well...I think if that gets implemented then having an affiliation with the faction you carry should result in some wartime fun (If Faction A is in a war with Faction B, then unless reputation is more than X you will be engaged in battle; increase the traffic in those particular airspaces)

In my estimation, you can change faction by allying yourself with any other faction by your actions. I have always considered the faction to be the faction to which your captain was born. You can't change that fact.

I've taken it to mean changing the ships flags or something similar. If I see a ship with the De Valtos tag on it, my captain sees something that clearly identifies it as working for De Valtos. It would actually be pretty cool to change the flag you are using, especially because us Pirate players could potentially have a ball with that.
Use it to enter a prohibited port (players would have to disable a ship as opposed to destroying it to get a flag) Use it to start wars instead of relying on random timing or a mission completion (Blockade Steel Song as De Valtos or Cadar, for example)...
there are just too many ideas I have.

I believe your ship flag is different to your faction flag (think that's right, if you capture or buy a ship from a different faction to your own your ship status shows that flag).
Could the ship flag have some additional features such as if the ship is flying a rychart flag and the capt is cadar they get some kind of bonus for using rychart facilities, even a temporary one?
Thoughts? - sorry of this was a bit long winded

Thoughts? - sorry of this was a bit long winded It does -- your Ship's Faction Flag has a long list of impacts .... Recruit, Reputation, Detection, etc. I think last time we counted the Captain was 70% of the checks and the Ship 30%, which means at least 60 different Ship Faction checks.

Fair enough... It really is awesome to know so much goes on within the game. So just want to take the opportunity to say awesome games! As was said above about the changing of factions could it be tweaked to incorporate this? For example if you have a different flagged ship you can enter trade exchanges etc that you couldn't normally enter cos of rep? All sneaky like Or changing the way rep works in the sense that when you have your own flagged ship rep is normal but with a different flag your own faction doesn't award full rep due to not knowing exactly who is captaining the vessel and the faction of the flag you are flying may award more due to thinking you are one of them. Or what about adding the ship flag to the combat screen? Just so the image takes a more prominent role. Don't know if the above is already calculated in but if so I gracefully withdraw Again tho, awesome games and hope to see more in the future

You can't change that fact. I totally forgot all about this post. I'm surprised anyone posted! I agree with you here. I was just thinking that, perhaps, there could be further penalties and benefits to going rogue "officially". I mean, yes, you'll still be born whatever nation birthed you. But maybe there a sort of slightly deeper "loyalty program" mechanic where who you are allied with really makes a difference. Honestly though, I think a lot of the newer ideas could, and should, be held off for ST2....ST2 should totally be an MMO. I know! It could be a fun version of Eve Online! Yeah! >_> One can dream.

You cannot change your character's genetics or speech. =)
You are born into the Faction you are and even as a Hated Criminal, you cannot change your character's birthright.

We will be making more games ... if Heroes of Steel makes enough money to pay for food and medical expenses.
If not, we're out -- and the plans and designs for ST2 will stay just that -- plans and designs.

I'm guessing medical expenses are caused by many of these posts and you guys reaching for the next box of heavy duty meds lol. I did have an idea for you guys to generate some revenue but didn't know where to put it... Let me know and all the best to you

I'd hate to see you guys fall down for lack of funding. The level of detail in game and feedback in and out of the forums is astounding. So I wish you guys a long (and healthy ) development careers. Just to bring it round to topic again: is there anything on the cards for playing as an independent?
