I love to play Sins of a Solar Empire. It's not exactly like star trader though. It's a strategy game, in space. But if you like spaceships, giant space battles, and cap ships doing awesome stuff, then the game might be for you No real trading aspect though..

starflight 2 This game actually reminds me ALOT of that game. This was my first space sim back in the 90's and I still rank it as one of my favorite games. Some people are actually working on an unoffical/official sequel www.starflight3.org/?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1they have been working on it for years though, so we'll see what happens. They still update the forums though so I am hopeful!

Dude, I have a notebook that lists all of the colonizable planets, each inhabitted planet and what they bought/sold, and a huge freaking starchart that had all the warps, planets and everything including the ones that were in the nebulas (that took FOREVER until I realized I could go back and time and they exists back there as well.....)
I found the game on our Tandy with no rule book. Half of the fun was figuring out there was actually a freaking goal in that game lol

I remember it got really good reviews when it released. Wasn't there another game similar to it? I can't recall all of them games anymore.

Uh... I don't think there is any game recently similar..
As for older games that are similar, I think the Homeworld series is, but I've never played it.
I highly recommend Sins of a Solar Empire. Pick up the Trinity pack if you do (has both expansions) because the game really isn't the same without them. The newest one, Diplomacy, is fun but I wouldn't say super critical. But the first expansion Entrenchment is really an essential to have.

I'm told "Masters of Orion" was a similar idea to Star Traders but implemented somewhat differently. You might try it if you can find it. I've seen it in the dollar bin at Wal-Mart occasionally even as it's quite old.

If you're looking for any of the X3's you can always go through steam store.steampowered.com/sub/6330/Though a game that I used to play that is similar(or at least was similar when I played) was EVE (also through steam) online. It's kind of like a MMO of Star Traders pretty much. Though I find myself enjoying this little game on my android phone so much more then the ones I've spent hours on the computer playing. No matter how many times I have to start over because of a very stupid oversight on my part. ...and there were a lot of them.

I've been suffering from a serious obsession with AI War: Fleet Command of late.
It's kind of a combo of an RTS, a 4X TBS, and a tower-defense game.
I'm not normally into the whole real-time "thang", but I am enjoying this one.

AI War: Fleet Command is a fantastic game. The lead engineer's blogs about AI design are fantastic.
I love adapting learning AI, they are something I had have a lot of passion for in my professional career.

Yeah, I quite enjoyed his articles on how his AI works. I also, being into the game, REALLY liked the one comparing the three phases of AI War to the three phases of Chess.
(I also have to admit that A Valley Without Wind is sounding like it's going to give a serious run-for-your-money to your own fantasy-game, having said that I haven't really looked at it much more than to go over some marketing stuff for it. But it's sounding pretty good, and he did outstanding work on AI War.)
By the by, if you ever want someone to help you lose to the AI in a game I'd be happy to step up and be that bad boy. I'd like to claim I could help you win, but I think that would probably be a lie.
