Ummmm technically, there was a way to have a fleet- I believe it was called Kenway's Fleet. I think you could have well over a dozen ships, if I recall. Yeah, they could do missions all over the world, earn you money and everything... Lol

Kenway's Fleet is a Naval Combat minigame in Assassin's Creed 4 that requires an online connection and a Uplay code that ships with each copy of the game (though you don't need a Uplay account). Though you can play the game solo, without any help from online friends, it still requires you to connect online.
You do realize that the budget for this one minigame was probably larger than the entire Age of Pirates engine?
LOL indeed. You're right, I forgot about that game. That wasn't even in the trailer that got AoP going, but, you win I guess =)

I can totally see the argument for taking the ST 4X game engine, re-doing the rules and ships for AoP theme and releasing "Age of Pirates: Empires at Sea"

The online connection and code is really Ubisoft's way of discouraging used game sales. They're kinda infamous for it. Lol And I was just asking for the ability to switch ships at dock ST style. Hopefully for free or $1. But I'd love an actual fleet like acbf where I can order an npc ship (preferably one I bought at a specific port) to stock up on certain supplies (using my own funds) and send off after a rumor (hopefully close enough that I can get the shortage bonus, but if not, have an option to send it back to port or just unload and return). I wouldn't want to have a boatload (ba dum!) of ships following me around, but being able to create an economic or pirate operation would be awesome. Of course, this wouldn't have to be a free update. I'd shell out $5 or $7 just to buy this ability as a dlc.

I was wrong- the Fleet DID require a code to be gotten online, but it was a badly-hidden way to pushing an online drm system on players slowly. They have since abolished the passport requirements for all their games. m.ign.com/articles/2013/11/01/ubisoft-kills-online-pass-system-effective-immediatelyAs for the online Fleet, that's true but for purposes of multiplayer (which is basically clicking a friend's ship to make it go faster. That's it) and to use it with the companion app. It requires an online connection, but not for any particularly interesting reason. It was a let down for a game of its budget, really.

I would pay sooooo much money for an npc fleet, it's not even funny- 20 bucks no problem. I know that's not feasible, but to have a way to handle shortages and rumors and global wars would be absolutely priceless, imo. I know it's a mountain of code and you guys have ST4X and HoS to work on, but just think about it

I'm still wondering why Ubisoft didn't make the ship steerable in AC 3... kinda ruined the game for me...
Get out of my Bedroom!!
