Ladies and Gentlemen of the Court ... I have a bit of bad news to share: LodSys, LLC is threatening to take legal action against Star Traders RPG related to our use of a button saying "Elite $1.99" that links to the Android Market. For those of you who may follow me on Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/corytrese) you got it in real-time. If you did not, I will probably put up some blogs about the situation as more facts develop. I wanted to post here because I now have 24 hours of backogged forum reading, emails and ST:RPG support. Your ongoing support and encouragement has been great and I appreciate everyone who has offered assistance. I may have less time to dedicate to development (meeting with legal, writing letters, etc) but I am desperate to keep the flow of player support going. I will do my best to remain active (and Andrew as well) on the forum. If you see threads that are important but not receiving responses, please e-mail me and let me know that it needs attention. www.androidpolice.com/2011/06/22/lodsys-patent-trolling-continues-what-should-android-developers-do-google/fosspatents.blogspot.com/2011/06/lodsys-asks-for-two-more-months-to.html

Imaginary Property issues again....
*deep f&*#!ng sigh*
I can't put into words how little respect I have for the current IP system. (and it's not because I like your game Cory, though that's true, it's because you were just the most recent recipient of IP-related BS that I've heard of)

These companies and the corresponding companies disgust me. How in the world can you claim to "own" something you have no intention of using? Let alone the discussion of whether or not the patents pass the uniqueness test.

I have no idea what's going on here, but at least it was a false alarm.

Grrrr, it pisses me off that a frakking company that is purely set up to come up with bullsh!t patents with absolutely no intention of doing any code creation of their own, has the gall to go and sue randomly. Their whole business model is all about income from law suits and licensing technology that they have no desire to actually create themselves. Lodsys has established the new low - below that of pathetic ambulance-chasing lawyers - below that of lawyers who advise their clients that yes, they can sue a company for $500 million because the brick they threw at that company's front window bounced off the glass and hit them in the head. Okay I exaggerate that last example. I think it was actually for low millions rather than hundreds of millions, but yes, there was a law suit placed by some moron who threw a brick at a window only to find it didn't break! So now as I see it ... - there are good lawyers
- okay lawyers
- scum lawyers who defend multiple murderers who were caught with the assault rifle, ammo, and a suicide note
- scummier lawyers who appeal convictions for a guilty client on a frakking technicality (Your honor, my client should be set free because the officer used a lower-case "d" in my client's surname when it should have been a "D".
- ambulance chasers - and yes, I sooooo want the semi following the ambulance to flatten those bastards without warning
- lawyers who encourage and go for stupidly outrageous claims for compensation because their stupid morons of clients trip over their own shoe laces
- deValtos used ship dealers
- ...
- Argblargle sh!t ... yes, it's as foul and corrosive as you think it is
- ...
- Lodsys LLC
- Mark Small - the prick who seems in control of Lodsys LLC

According to their website, Lodscum have pretty much indicated that ANY developer that includes things like "buy now" buttons in product is potential fair game for a potential law suit.
There is that old joke - what do you call 100 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean. A good start. However, what do you call a Lodsys lawyer at the bottom of the ocean ... toxic waste.

I don't think all lawyers are crap. Prosecutors are Good. If you're in the wrong and claim otherwise, they'll shut you down hard. Defense attorneys piss me off, defending the guilty 9/10 times.

Wait a second, this whole false alarm was over the purchase button used on the marketplace? The hell? Regarding a buy it now button in the free version for the elite version. Which, for the record I never used.

LodSys LLC came back today, said I was a naughty developer.
I guess they got confused about who this "Cory Trese" guy is. He seems to have a lot of web sites and be operating a bunch of stuff, crazy forums and so on.
I am now going to take my hard earned Star Traders RPG dollars and give them to a lawyer to protect Star Traders RPG.
They are threatening to do takedown notices with Google
