Demolish buildings that aren't being useful. Defenses for inner worlds are a prime example. One the border is secured, inner colonies don't need defenses. The location of Xenos is pure luck. They could be all the way across the Quadrant or in your backyard.

lixxx235 - playing "close to the wire" where you are near 0 is great in the early game. In the mid-game, I would highly suggest slowing down the upgrade rate for a little while until you accumulate a treasury. -600 for a few turns while you run a Treaty or find time to mitigate it by cleaning up colonies is not bad if you have $20K stashed. It's game over if you have $200, because now you are -$ and you can't take any steps to fix it.

I have just tried a bigger map, not exploring to far and not putting anything into ship building apart from colony ships. Try not to get discovered. Habs for 6 population, then a factory, then a mine, then more habs and factories. Add palace then spice den as population hits 10-12. Research entirely into planetary construction, get factory 2 and Mine 3 and upgrade all the old ones. Keep construction points maxed out as being able to build fast or generate more cash is critical. Try not to get too disheartened when your new colonies keep getting quality at the bottom range of the scale, you can survive this happening a few times at the easier difficulties. One spice den 3, one factory 3 and Max Habs 3 and keep throwing spice festivals. The trade points add up somehow (still not sure of the details) and income goes up rapidly as long as you make sure morale is 9 or 10 everywhere (palace, then spice dens, then spice festivals if desperate). Upgrading to mine 3 and factory 2/3 makes magic happen. I now have 76k +2.6k per turn and may even survive the Xeno Sent from my GT-I9300 using proboards

I build Exchanges and upgraded Mines and Factories on every world that has enough Quality for them. My current game has 500k Credits in the treasury, with 117% Maintenance rate and about 2k in income per turn.
