I think this is really exciting. Casual games lead the way, these are more people downloading games and experimenting with different genres. Things tend to start with casual and bleed out into core. That is true of good things (more players) and bad things (consumable IAP.)
I hope that the demographics of the companies making games starts to shift to match. An exciting time.

Hi grävling. Interesting article. I'm not sure how the association collected it's figures, or if some of the "women", were in fact men, but overall, it's probably games like The Sims, that started the ball rolling, plus the minigames that come bundled with some phones, as standard. Bit concerning that only 15% play RPG's though. I see what you mean. Yes, Cory. This sort of info is obviously very important, from your position. Lets hope RPG figures increase as well.

That's an interesting study but I wonder what other games female are playing aside of "casual and social" games. I mean : in the 80s there were horrible games like Barbie or this strange one on DS (in the turn of the century) with a stable to run but now there is no more games especially develop for women (and it's obviously a good thing). Do the hardcore female gamers play Call Of Duty ? That's what I wonder.

I really want someone to study why women are underrepresented in so called "hardcore" games. Why is academia so slow when it comes to studying video games!? Bah!

I'm suprised more people don't get into RPGs, what with modern games (especially mobile ones) using 'level up!' as a hook to keep gamers playing / paying. It seems like every game gives out XP and level increases these days... Heck, even the Google Achievement system does it!

It's 99.9999% (recurring), of the gaming population of the planet, playing RPG's, and someone somewhere is still playing Angry Birds.

It's REALLY happening! Soon RPG's will rule the world! Of course, technically, we are all living one BIG rpg, called "life", anyway.

Yep, 'Angry Birds Epic' is a real game. And by game, I mean a Rovio Product. And by Rovio Product, I mean an Advertising Vehicle with Interactive Elements Designed for Addiction Enabling More People to See More Advertisements.
