Yep Cory, Faction owner of the sector. For example, if I saw there was a shortage of something on a Steel Song exchange, I wouldn't waste my time hauling stuff there because of my -827 rep.

It's really cool being able to see how the ship you have encountered relates to others before you decide to obliterate them (or not). However, right now it seems that the text is quite verbose. What would be great is something more simple like: Syndicate Rychart is currently: * trade embargoed with Steel Song * in a solar war with Thulun * is Allied with Cadar * experiencing a hat surplus Okay, probably not the last option, but as you can imagine, it's briefer and more easily readable. Just a thought

It's funny - I've never really had a problem with water, even when I stayed in the Vae Victus to go for the Level 10 award thingy. I built up significant stores by buying all the water from urban areas and dumping it at caches very close by. The planets didn't seem to run out of water that quickly and seemed to restock within a short period of time.
It certainly helped that there were some great "explore" options in the wilds close to the urban bases (eg NE of the Steel Song home world). Some of the caches ended up with hundreds of units of water.
What I DID run out of on a regular basis was crew. Given I only had 35 crew to do exploring with the Victus, I regularly lost 30 in one or two "accidents". Even when I upgraded to a larger ship, the most I lost in one exploration was 92% of my total crew (I limped back to port with a crew of 7). If I were a person wanting to sign up with a captain, I'd certainly never want to sign up with an explorer captain!

Ya know, I've just started a new game with a Steel Song captain and I have you know that his mother is very clean ... and went for premium credits when he sold her on the black market!

The more I keep playing this cazumptuiously addictive game, the more I ponder about the various galaxy conflicts. It seems like factions change their minds every couple of weeks or months, and some factions that were best buds, having a Trade Alliance one month, suddenly flip to having a Spy War the next. Maybe that's my own perception and there are more smarts to the game controlling how fast/slow relationships between factions change, but I thought of a couple of possible ideas that may/may not help a captain 1) Faction relationships should indeed step only one "shift" one way or another. You shouldn't get a faction that is in a Trade War one round, to alliance the next.
2) It would be good to have a date when the faction relationship status changed (sort of like: Trade Embargo 105.3AE [Flag1] v. [Flag2] That way you can quickly identify which of the factions has suddenly started whacking on eachother for sport ... and perhaps which ones have been in embargo for so long that they might be craving some trade.
3) You as a captain have some small influence in inter-factional relationships. For example, if you are flying under the banner of Cadar, and continually cause Steel Song ships to mysteriously explode, then surely over the course of a couple of years, relationships between the two nations will become a little less friendly.
4) I can't think of a 4th.
5) In the Exchange screen, your political officer advises that there is an embargo in place. It would be awesome to know exactly what factions are embargoed (or have trade alliances) at this stage. That way if the embargo is against Steel Song, you just feel compelled to trade weapons and stuff.
That's about it from my musings.
Oh ... and don't get me wrong, I do like Steel Song ... so much so that I try and spread their ship pieces all across the quadrant. It's like seeding the galaxy in the hopes that little Steel Song seedlings will spring up (in the vacuum of space).

Are there any other conflicts in play? It's definitely weird that you have problems with missions against independents, but sometimes you get the situation: Cadar allied with De Valtos De Valtos allied with Steel Song. When you do a mission for Cadar against Steel Song, you can get negative rep for De Valtos.
Also, what version/build of ST are you using?

I can't help it - every time I start, I make a point of trying to be nice to Steel Song, but it's like they have "Puh-lease SHOOT me" painted on their prow. It must be their flag - kind of symbolizing one whopping big target for me to take aim for.
But on topic ... I tend to spend a lot of time doing jobs for De Valtos cos they pay well and therefore must have kind hearts.

I love the bigger maps too, but for some reason I typically only get offered contracts that make me fly my butt all the way from one corner of the map to the one diagonally opposite. Sure it's great for frequent flier reward points, but it's a little bit of pain. In honesty though, my biggest gripe is that my ships hold is just too small given a cross-quadrant flight. I always seem to run into some Steel Song ships and I feel honor-bound to board and strip all cargo out of that ship before setting its self-destruct. Before you know it, you have to be selective about what stuff you ... umm ... borrow. What we need is a nice bag of holding, but then, that's a different game I didn't know about the rejecting contracts impacts on this award though. I always reject contracts that might annoy my trade partners. It's cheaper to reject them than have to go through the trouble of bribing an official for yet another trade permit or death warrant <grin>

I agree. Sometimes two factions suddenly become friendly with eachother, and whilst you've been building up relations with one faction, you've been working hard to blow the other one out of the heavens. Now all of a sudden you find killing Javat scum makes Cadar want to demote you! Knowing faction info would be useful before it's too late I guess that's what a political officer could help out with (should you have one). Actually, what would be nice to have (changing the topic a little) is in the Faction Politics screen, if you click on an icon, it brings up all of the relationships with other factions. Eg, clicking on Thulun's icon brings up: vs Javat: Thulun is currently in a Solar War with Javat Thulan is currently in a Trade Embargo with Javat vs Steel Song: There are no issues between Thulun and Steel Song vs De Valtos: Thulun is in an alliance with De Valos vs Cadar: Thulun is in a trade alliance with Cadar vs Rychart: There are no issues between Thulun and Rychart
