It happened twice already...
I heard a shortage rumor. Bought the items from different planets and maxing out my cargo hold. Headed towards the planet with shortage. (did not re-check the rumor page if it expired, well it was near the bottom of rumor page so it must have a longer time frame) When I land on urban, a toast come up...A DIFFERENT ITEM IS ON SHORTAGE!!!. WUT DA???!!! Checked the rumor page and on the spot where the rumor was, a different item is now listed.
Is this a bug? This never happened before the new version. The only thing I can think of is, if the planet has a low spice hall or palace rating (means less rumor or maybe "inaccurate" rumor?) But the planets I've visited must have a decent rating since the place where they've heard it is pretty far away. I can't fly 32AU away just to check if the rumor is true if I still have to pick up and fill my cargo, by the time I get there, I may be too late.

I've had this happen a number of times. Usually it is because I heard the rumor from a small planet and the time stamp of the rumor is when I heard it rather than when the rumor began.
So you know the quality of rumor depends on a number of factors, including the quality of the planet (I think the Palace, Econ or Secure value needs to be high), and also if you have added records to the exchange, it boosts the quality of the rumors. Anyway ... low quality rumors can actually be old or far away (or both). Good quality rumors are relatively fresh.
If could be (and I'm guessing here) ... you were at a slightly more backward planet and got given a stale rumor. By the time you responded to it, it expired or changed.
In saying all of that, I've been to Cadar Provonis, where palace = 10, econ = 7, secure = 8, and the rumors I got from there were pretty inconsistent. I think it's because Cadari are just not gossips.

Rumors can change as time passes. Depending on the dice rolled and the planet in question, they can change fast.
Buying to sell into shortage is not the ST RPG optimal strategy. Caches exist to facilitate stockpiles and shortage unloads.
So, definitely not new. I don't see a bug here, either.
There might be something possible with overriding the simulator to ensure a minimum time to live on a shortage but that doesn't sound like it adds fun to me (just more slow down of the main map doing such checks.)

I've seen other things with rumors....
Aliens are attacking! COOL, I head straight there. Patrol for 60 water worth of turns. NOTHING.

This thread reminds me
I took three jobs - two of them were on xeen prime - one in the starbase, one in the palace. the other job was somewhere else.
on my way to xeen prime, i pissed steel song off enough to where they wouldn't let me in the starbase.
so, i get there - starbase is shaded out (but bold) palace is not bold palace has regular palace thing (no attempt contract dialog) both jobs still appear in my contracts
the palace job unfortunately expired before the starbase job, so i couldn't see whether or not i could get in after the starbase job expired.

As a pirate I was looking for rumors about "merchants hiring extra security" and "valuable cargo", but never encountered anything worth it. Not sure if it is just me, bad luck, or rumor expired.

k0rd -- Not sure I'll be able to fix that, just a factor of edges on the political scale. but I know what you are speaking about. A few months ago, the system would send you into dead-end contracts constantly =) Fenikso -- those rumors do more on higher difficulties but the first one changes the distribution of ships in the sector for encounters and the second one loads a totally different cargo generation routine known as "richness cargo." Thanks!

@cory to be clear, i know that the game used to send to to dead places, and i understand that if i can't get into the stardock, i obviously have to forfiet my contract. the issue i was trying to point out is that i had a valid contract at the palace (which i WAS able to entee) but the game acted as if i had no contract at the palace (despite the job still showing up on contracts activity.) not sure if i was clear last message edit: i had a job on the same planet for the now locked starport at the same time

A spacing Captain cannot sequencing the Contracts he has sword an oath to complete. The Captain could reach Orbital Space, use the "Vox" to "Void" the Contract and then re-land at the urban zone, declare a different Shalun Contract and then complete as normal.

I had a similar problem...I had a palace job, but then some retarded tried to assassinate the prince and the icon greyed out. There should be an option called "meet the guy in the spice hall" or something...

Not every job will work out, sometimes there will be complications.
Depending on the planet, the rumors may come and go in time to complete the Contract, and sometimes, they won't.
The Captain has to make a judgement call.
