I wonder why Kretes are so much trouble. It's a long time since I had a death by Krete. The toughest enemies for me are forged spiders, especially the big ones, since they are quick, move around the front line, attack three times, and to tremendous damage. It's easy to lose one of the weaker back line characters to them.

Krete are a nonissue, so do forged spiders, if you plan your "Chaaarge!!!" carefully and in the right direction. This is all about making right choices. Or choices, that work, at the very least.

Trolls of all kinds (cave, ice, war, forum) are a joke. I can't remember the last time I took damage from a troll. Probably a Vraes vs Kincaid issue. Although I do appreciate the hilarious irony here. My most frequent source of deaths in NM Ironman groups are the Krete.

Krete for sure. For me, the big "beachhead battle" in ep 2 is one of the hardest so far, even after the glacial caves and the underforge its like hitting a brick wall!

I don't know about necessarily hardest, but black spiders are the bane of my existence before reaching the first waystation/lvling point. Losing a stealth roll to a pack of ten of them on nightmare is an insta death. Sometimes if I give up the stealth roll and lead even with vraes he will get insta killed by a max # spawn of those f***ers. Kincaid doesn't stand a chance without a stealth roll because they have 3 attacks a turn and before lvling hes got SP 1 and no +dodge/+parry and hes paper thin compared to vraes. More early game loses have come to me from black spiders than anything else. I want to open up a can of raid on my tablet screen sometimes.

What are black spiders? Just went through to oskahold on NM not to long ago and I only saw orange and green spiders? The hardest monsters I've faced so far are the beetles in the warm cave.

thehowler the green spiders are funnily enough called black spiders in the mob description a tip for the beetles. They are hard to hit, but do very little damage. It will depend on your team what will work best at the time, but when facing them you want to focus exclusively on accuracy. For this reason when playing Vraes on nightmare I like to use spears. They have great accuracy and a high minimum damage. For Kincaid I like to dual wield with a heavy stiletto and a hilted dagger so I get 5acc/3parry, same for a melee selen when going after the beetles. The beetles have a very high resistance so unless you are running an energy storm and/or holy strickening build magic damage is fairly useless against them. Also make sure to hit them with every -dodge/-parry curse in your arsenal. They are an SP drain for sure, but not very dangerous. The same tactics will serve you well on things like giant ratkin and deathkin that are also hard to hit, but much more likely to kill you.

Omg, that's funny, never noticed that. Well I've never run into any issues with them. Must be luck. I can see how a horde of them munching on vraes wold ve deadly, but I've only seen max like 3 at once.
Yea my group for my first NM run is vraes, fyona, kj, and selen. I just choking ash and Pinning shot them, I'm using swords because my other vraes (on my hard ironman) used a spear. And the beetles were a major pain. But like you said their damage was not much, still it was the closest I have come so far to dying lol.

Had to go with Krete... Specifically the archers. What a bloody nightmare!

As my Vraes is an absolute tank (of course), I've been going in with Stone Skin and swinging a two-handed sword. I've had him leading the assault after combat ensues (but lead the field with Tamilyn for stealth), putting him at the spearhead of my cross formation so he takes all the hits and having my cleric heal him. Currently playing on hard difficulty, I've just left the spy camp to go to war with the Baron, and at level 13 have just put my first point into Phalanx Shield and switched to a sword and shield set up. Of course I realise I've already come through dozens of the Krete in the Torrent Watershed, but I always back up around corners so their archers have to get in close to get line of sight, meaning I can fireball and aimed shot the crap out of them while Vraes soaks up damage and my cleric heals. Still, a failed stealth roll in an open area is, as I say, a bloody nightmare!

Be prepared to review your tactics, when mobs start to pick targets other than the closest one. For me it was in Red Hills storerooms, start of ep.2.

Be prepared to review your tactics, when mobs start to pick targets other than the closest one. For me it was in Red Hills storerooms, start of ep.2. Well I was reading in another thread about how one particular guys playing style meant that SS becomes less helpful for him as he progresses, due to the HP buff being less beneficial as enemies begin to do more damage. This was what originally made me think, as my playing style - focusing as much damage as possible onto single targets and beating the crap out of them - would potentially leave a lot more units on the map than I'm used to at higher levels, and all with full health. So I'm mixing it up now - I'm progressing in rank through some ranged defence and dodge increasing buffs, and I'll be putting focus into some AoE attacks, particularly beyond level 18. Once I've reached the end of this game (I mean the final, as yet unreleased end beyond episode 4 act 2) I may finally invest in some of the DLC characters! What a brilliant game though. Love it!

I'm not saying that SS will be less beneficial. I'm saying that it won't do anything at all, when mobs start to kill party members in the back, completely ignoring Vraes.

I just wanted to stop by and say... The Krete are terrible people. Haven't died yet. But I might... Terrible people.
