Question to the crowd - should we fix the low price of safehouses? You can snap up a handful of them for $10K and it seems very cheap for lifetime rent. Especially considering that a lot of the higher game functions (crafting, drone modding, internal clinic) are going to require Safehouses. P.s. you won't be able to put all your updates in a single house. I think the problem is with the single one time purchase. If we rented the things and had to shell out every month, things would be different. I tend to buy a safehouse in South Boston because I work there a lot on and would appreciate a place to stay. Otherwise, the question for me has always been -- why spend money for a safehouse when you can just sleep at Escort Agency/KH Clinic/Old Church Clinic and then taxi to wherever work is?

grävling - due to the addition of the mods (phones, etc), we will not be able to implement rented safehouses. We had to pick one or the other, and phones seemed way more fun.

I can't disagree with you on that. To get back to your previous question : I must agree with the idea of raising up the price for safehouses. Maybe the more expensive ones could have a pre-installed option ?

beuns - oh, I like that. Any safehouse over $5,000 could come with a phone installed, etc.

Especially considering that a lot of the higher game functions (crafting, drone modding, internal clinic) are going to require Safehouses. P.s. you won't be able to put all your updates in a single house. Absolutely. I'm all for making them brutally expensive, so for the first few hours of play they are a pipe dream. The following is, as always, just my own feelings on the subject and how I would personally like them to be: As I say, I love the idea of them being expensive. Maybe have a comparatively cheap one in a relatively undesirable location, which you can only upgrade with a phone. So you've got a place to rest and take jobs, but it might be away from gun shops / medical centres. I think, with the proposed upgrades, a safe house is something which you should have to save and save for. As you wander the city blocks scoping out possible buildings to rent, it should be a real choice as to which one you go for, as it will be the only one you can afford for a long time. This not only makes the original decision more important and gives you a goal to strive for, it makes finally obtaining the one you want incredibly satisfying, giving a real sense of achievement - like you've gotten to a whole new level, like you're finally making it as a Knight - by obtaining one. Of course, for this to work, you'd have to know in advance what you could do with the place, maybe through dialogue / the thoughts of your Knight, so you didn't waste your cash. The dialogue at the moment is very sparse. I would prefer, for example: 'Taking a look around the place, you notice the pole outside carries hardwiring straight into the building. You could easily install a phone and matrix port here. The spare room at the back could be made secure, in order to safely store weapons and supplies. Alternatively, with sufficient funds, the room could be used to install a clinic of sorts'. Or "Hmm. External hardwiring. I can fit a phone and matrix terminal straight in this place - access from inside. There's a second room here too. Looks big. Plenty of space to stash stuff I don't wanna sell, if I make it secure. Or I could kit it out with medical equipment, if I don't need it for storage". "Hey chummer, stop gawking. It's 25k - take it or leave it". That kind of thing. The price is just a figure I put in for illustration, it's not reflective of anything

mataeus - that is generally my take as well. Getting your first Safehouse should feel like a big deal. Also, if the price of Safehouses went up, the price of upgrades (clinic, etc) would come down.

Yeah, I was just looking at the price of a phone, $5000! Hardly seems worth it when there's one just down the Street. Maybe for a data port...

I'd pay _more_ for a dataport where you can hack in peace, without having to worry about local goons butchering you. Lots, Lots, Lots more. Also sounds like a way to lose a safehouse to me. Hack too often from the same location, and a bunch of Mars and BS goons arrive at your door, trash the place, burn it to the ground, and (if you are at home) try to kill you. In any case, one unusable safehouse ...

And I love mataeus ' ideas, though I think you would get the information from reading the prospectus in the real estate office.

Love the idea of a compromised safehouse.

Love the idea of a compromised safehouse. Oh good. Arriving at your safehouse and finding it burnt to the ground should be good for an interesting dialog as well.

Not sure if a safehouse being burnt down is a good thing, but the idea that it could be found and there is a chance someone may come to attack is cool. Also not being able to use it for some time because it's been put under surveillance would be neat, for example,
"As you approach your safe house, you notice a group of strange people looking through windows and questioning citizens going in and out of the building. Several other people you've never seen in the neighborhood are hanging around and watching you closely. It may not be safe to stay here tonight."

Isn't there a safehouse in the Downtown Gateway area? What does this mean for the hacking portions of Operation East-Wind Niner?
