No idea if this is possible or even worth it, but hey... I just found out how to rename ships today (derp) and thought it would be cool to retain the class name along with it. So when you brought up the ship screen it would say something along the lines of: "CSN Victorious" (Basilisk Mk.I) Just to help me keep things organised, it would be nice to be able to sort by class on the ship selection screen, can't think of a compelling reason why. I love renaming my fleet and from an RP point of view would make me feel more in command of a unified fleet rather than a rag-tag bunch of individual ships, being able to send in "the latest batch of Cobra Mk.II cruisers" rather than "the ships 'Defiant', 'Courageous' and 'Redoubtable'." As in - I'd like to have both The names for personality and the classes for 'grand fleet modernisation and strategy' As always, thanks for reading and for making a great game

I voted for the third, only because I never think about naming them honestly... To me, ships are expendable, especially until I get to some of the super structure ship types. Once I get my ships to the point where they can really handle some conflict, I start caring more about them. Until then, they are just well used and well managed cannon fodder.
Edit: Unless you meant naming them through the ship designer. I do this all the time... I usually stick to bird/insect/dino/animal names, and I set the entire fleet to a theme.

The way I think of it is the classes are named under the ship designer, and then I name individual ships when they get to 10XP or do something awesome. They're like my 'veteran force'. EDIT: Yeah, I like my reptile names too! Cruisers are generally snakes, fighters are usually "geckos" or similar and well, the carriers are usually "albatrosses", not a reptile but best I could do...

I'd go with 'Monitor' or 'Kimono' personally, staying with the reptile theme. Kimono might be better suited for the Battlecruisers though

Yeah I was saving the big ones for the Battlecruiser and Heavy Carrier etc. It took me several seconds to realise that you weren't suggesting that I name my carriers after a Japanese silk robe :/

I have my own class names. Then I add the weapon name at the end so I know what they have.

I use a classification like
X YY WWWW FFFF
X = Type {F}ighter, {C}ruiser, {T}anker, {R}epair, {B}oarding YY = Level WWWW = Weapon FFFF = Fleet
examples
F 5 Gun EastD C 8 Rail Attack T 5 Torp WestD R 4 Torp EastD B 4 Pods Attack

Nice... I can feel a squadron roster coming along... /ic ### INCOMING TRANSMISSION ### ### DECRYPTING ### ................................Complete TO: Red fleet CO FROM: Admiral Temeraire, Home Fleet PRIORITY: Black "Red fleet BatRon 3 to engage Xenos at [5,24], expect additional fire support from Blue fleet CruRon 1 to cover the flanks." ### TRANSMISSION END ### /ooc Or something like that anyway

Yeah, on that map I have two major defensive fronts, left (West) and right (East) and denote them with a "D"
Breaking the Attack Fleet down into Red and Blue squadrons is a great idea, would make organizing multiple attack carrier groups easier.

Yeah, all I need now is more colours for the ship skins They're only a dollar I know, I probably will get them to show my support, along with the new faction pack. What I was actually asking for was more colours for the Vae Victus inspired skins - I would happily pay for those

Thanks!

Having restarted playing recently, I started naming ships similarly to Cory but with more alien sounding names. If you know how Klingon sounds (which I used to speak to an extent) then you'll completely get it. If not, watch some Star Trek. Examples: RuWoCribah Rychart Wolf Cruiser VaWolCrutaan De Valtos Wolf Cruiser CaPalCarau Cadar Paladin Carrier CaSreFetok Cadar Strike Fighter CazStuFij Cadar Strike Fighter T'Cre Trader/Templar original Cruiser TokCrawu Trader/Templar original Cruiser TinStaFiga Trader/Templar Strike Fighter Consonants are the important parts. Vowels fill the gaps and add differentiation - this is what makes the words different and where some creativity comes in - the vowels are used to make the word readable but otherwise they're mostly ignored. An accent mark might indicate a ship is expendable. (You know you're on a one way mission on a ship named T'Cre.) The beginning indicates the faction/origin. The middle tells the kind of ship. So just by reading or saying the name of the ship I know who it belongs to and what kind it is. I'm going to continue developing that. For example the last syllable might tell where is deployed. Like TinStaFigNox is deployed to the north but it becomes TinStaFig'SuWok if it's redeployed to the southwest as fodder. A name change might include an accent on the back end, like adding Ah!, to indicate a high level of experience. So for example to recognize one of the Cruisers above as a veteran : T'CreAh, TokCrawuAh If anyone is interested I'll document this at some point, and if someone says the name of their ship is RuWoCribah, we'll have a basic idea of its specs.
