In the ship designer I name mine by function and main weapon, for example CA Whirlwind MK. 2.
CA = Combat Assault CSR/CSF = Combat Support Repair/Fuel EA = Expansion Assault ES = Expansion Support
This keeps things simple, I can generally tell how advanced the ship is by it's weapon, and defensive groups always move with invasion groups as the line pushes forward.
Each ship gets a unique name after 25 exp, and on my current Garden Hard game, just about every combat ship I have (64 ships total) is named. "The Red Baron" is leading the pack at 73 exp, "The Wall" at 71, with everyone else 50 or below. It would be nice to quickly see what they used to be.
If (when?) we get the ability to squad ships up, this could make organization more convenient. Group low tech, high exp ships with high tech, low exp ships.

CA = Combat Assault CSR/CSF = Combat Support Repair/Fuel EA = Expansion Assault ES = Expansion Support I sort by a combination of Function and a Make/Model approach. I often have a primrary function and secondrary function. I like your code system, I may adopt something very similar. Currently I am rather verbose. Heavy Fighter - Multi-Repair Heavy Fighter - Multi-Refuel And I tell you, I thought, this is going to be good, but the last two are so long they get cut off. I only made that mistake once. So I just call them; Refuel Repair I could have done something like the below; HF-MR Lance III HF-MF Lance But, I dont really need this for the refuel and repair guys, so it is simple for them. I colour the support dudes in new skins with bright green for refuel and red for repair. Gotta have ya flouros on boys, safety first... lol Generally, I like to have one smaller cheaper option of combat aircraft, so when things get desperate, there are some cheap fodder to launch quickly. Some of them get their own special function name. If there are only a limited number of them in the fleet, they play a very important (or unique) role, so, I am only after one class of that ship. Planet Killer Breader Pirate (this is my boarding party) Tracker (Explorer Class)

I started off with super verbose design names as well, but got tired of deleting half the name when updating designs. Throwing out classifications also makes it feel a little more realistic. I use different ship skins for each type, so I could easily get away with naming them all "a" without getting confused, but where's the fun?
The cheap fighter is the cornerstone of my fleet through the early and mid game, but I'm finding that late game the tech can't keep up. I recently scrapped and rebuilt my entire fleet, and gave my fighters all the bells and whistles. Fewer fighters with more 3ap torp equipped support ships in the late game has been working better for me. I can't hold as long a line, but the torps are tearing the xeno to shreds, with the fighters mopping up. It's been a huge but effective dynamic shift.

What types of Fighter hull are you using? Just basic Fighter?

What types of Fighter hull are you using? Just basic Fighter? Mostly basic fighter, but each squad has an assault fighter as well. However, my assault fighters have been weak performers for most of the game. It's likely I just haven't put enough effort into their design, as I've never depended on them. With my fleet redesign, I brought out some strike cruisers, and they've proven to be wrecking balls on the battlefield, so the assault fighters may get dropped anyway in favor of something else.

I use a classification like X YY WWWW FFFF X = Type {F}ighter, {C}ruiser, {T}anker, {R}epair, {B}oarding YY = Level WWWW = Weapon FFFF = Fleet examples F 5 Gun EastD C 8 Rail Attack T 5 Torp WestD R 4 Torp EastD B 4 Pods Attack WAIT a second... how did you get numbers???!!! I need numbers. Can I get numbers on the keyboard? if it's not too much to ask, pretty please.
