Guys, the bank idea comes from the old BBS door TradeWars en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_WarsThe person could buy stocks or it could be just a place to store the money.

stocks would be nice, but i think that the rich people (or honored people in house territory) own all the stocks, and i remember that you decided to be a captain, not a banker, didnt you???
and all the money is already banked in your quadrant wide credit account or whatever.

taatuu25 -- Right on. Centralized banking is a backbone of the game's reputation, Faction and commerce systems. An "open stock exchange" is culturally impossible for members of the Factions and the Independents do not trust the Central Database enough to participate beyond Credit Exchanges. This idea (stock exchange, corporate bank) is a better fit for another TB game =) Stay tuned =)

Ah ... the money thing again. I still want the ability to steal money from other ships when you defeat them in battle. After all, they certainly steal your money when they beat you!

Taking money from other ships would definitely make going out finding battles even that much more fun. Also, I was just thinking about this idea earlier today. Having a bank would be great. Especially if you get looted or something, you can go back to your bank on a planet owned by your Faction and pull out some reserves.
I also find myself in that situation where I am saving up money for an upgrade, or maybe a new ship...I take a Contract, and along the way I run into numerous enemies and end up spending loads of money on repairs. Maybe I'm just a noob or something, but it can piss me off pretty good.

After all, they certainly steal your money when they beat you! Are you sure? I was convinced that you never loose money. Just during the mutiny you choose to give some money to your mates.

Hey Funikso, you're right! ... didn't get any cash taken from me during encounters with pirates. Man I hated actually surrendering rather than attacking. It just felt WRONG to the bone.
I do know you get penalized money-wise if you get imprisoned though.

sgtcookie --awesome response, I love the in-game knowledge coming out in your posts. Awesome. When you go to prison, the Captain that capture you does not take your money -- that is the work of the Central Database.

So the Central Database is fining you off it's own back or it's just the middle man? Either way, you loose cash when you are arrested.
Thank you for the complement, by the way.

SO ... how can we hack the Central Database ... my goodness that'd be an awesome end-game contract

The Central Database also maintains the Prison Fleet, which extracts Credits to "Protect Justice."
One of the big secrets of the ST RPG universe ...
- "What is the Central Database?"
Especially given that the Law of Shalun dictates that no machine shall be made to communicate with another free of the hand of man. Hmmmmm =)

That's easy. They use a spice doped oracle to predict your transaction. No machine communication there. Just pure magic and prophecy .

It stands to reason that the central database existed, in one form or another, since before the event. After the event, the central database was found, salvaged whatever and reworked to aid the quadrant at large.
Since the central database existed since before Shalun, there is nothing, technically, illegal. Also, since it is so far intertwined in the modern system, taking it offline would literally be catastrophic.

The central database is a mysterious and powerful device, it's mystery is exceeded only by it's power.
