I never really used boarding. I found that ships which could use it made great distractions or recon vessels. I always thought it was rather under powered whenever I used it, too. You're boarding their ship, after all. A decent bit of destruction, or at least some form of crippling effect, should be present! It lowers defense and makes the next attack (if it connects) hurt more. All kidding aside, I use my Boarders for World Killers and Torpers as my first punch before I knock them the heck out. ntsheep, put that away before Rabid sees it and thinks its his bunny toy! I don't want my head used as a hand puppet!!

Vraesrial - that's the whole point - it is a disabling attack!

I never really noticed. Usually when I need to use it, there are seven ships to deal with. That might be why I always missed that:/

I use the boarding a lot on defense. An assulte fighter and a couple strike fighters can take down a world killer quick
Also good later when the Xeno starts fielding more capital ships

My plan has worked perfectly then CdrPlatypus, while you're busy, my crew will be armed with Super Soakers and Hydras. Wet the sock then blast it with heat and they shrink. I can also release my Mecha Moths which enjoy eating synthetic blends. Ntsheep laughs manically, a sound that echoes through space. Some where out there, the captain of the Carrot Stick wakes up and says, "What in the hell is that!?"

Whoops! that post was in error. My browser must of cached an old version of this thread without all the posts of people saying the same thing that I was trying to say.

Maybe boarding could could have a small chance of disabling the other ship for a turn?

When you have your ships use board, are they sending Templars or normal soldiers?

since crew update fighters get crews with +attack bonus, and now i see that boarding is much more difficult to hit in comparison with other attacks fighters have crew and precision barrage cruisers and carriers have precision barrage and updated torpedo strikes assault fighters have nothing that increase their hit rolls, and in addition to this - boarding 2 is high end tech.
do you still use boarding in mid game? i have found that really fast assault fighters have problems with hitting xeno ships - they have about 50% chances with 9 warrior and lvl3 - its really low value when we compare it to maintain cost of fighters that can shot 2 times with (lets say) 85% chance precision barrage, and mostly i try to use them to attack missile xeno ships
they are good at first stage of game then we try to defend agains xeno waves, but when its time to attack - xenos are on lvl3 and they have better stats in deff agains them
how about you?

koles- I try to keep at least one or two on any given flank. Upgraded as far as possible, and ready to fight at a moments notice. They are more useful than they appear- I'm almost to year 12 in my current game, and they are still effective on enemy World Killers (Level 4 and 5 at this point). Honestly they're worth it only if you keep them around for the WK themselves. Sometimes that extra drop in armor can mean the difference between killing the WK or suffering at the hands of an invasion.

Maybe its a hold over from playing ST as a Steel Song Zealot, but I like boarding. It seems especially useful (at least while I am defending my relatively young colonies) at cleaning up weakened xeno ships that weren't destroyed by my cruisers.
Of course, I have little experience playing ST 4x yet. I may change my mind if/when I get to the later stages of play.

I keep one boarder(assault fighter) for every 4 fighters in the early game, and in the late game I've started using strike cruisers accompanied by torp cruisers for defense. However, I've noticed that my boarding ships have a tendency to be quickly outmatched by enemy tech due to lack of experience. My boarders always fire first in a round, so they rarely get the exp that would prolong their usefulness. Does anyone else have this issue?
Perhaps a leveling scheme similar to invasion ships would help boarding ships stay current. Maybe 1 exp for every 2 or 4 successful attacks?

Boarding craft should get EXP if the enemy ship is destroyed while under the effects of the boarding 'curse' IMO...
I too have this issue, where I won't bother with the high level boarding pods or the special boarding carrier(?) because of how fast they fall behind.
As it is right now, they shoot themselves in the foot in a way. If you want to kill a ship with your assault craft, you need to attack them with everything BUT the one ship that makes everything easier to kill (boarding craft), making EXP accumulation counterintuitive in a way.

I like to use boarding. I'm at year 4.2AE in one game I'm playing, and have built two assault fighters. One has 3 experience and the other has 5. I weaken the enemies with my cruisers and then double team them with the assault fighters. Seems to work so far.
