Why not add rebels or something? These are humans, after all. When you get past all of their governments and nationalities, there is bound to be some shady stuff going on. I'd love to be building my colonies one day and find that some form of rebellion is occurring, which ensues some kind of military or trade threat.

That would be pretty cool. Actually, sounds like something from ST2...

Thanks for the feedback! It is Star Traders, so you know very well that there are shady back-dealings, smuggling and the rest. You'll see Independents cropping up on low value and unhappy worlds. That as close as we'll get in this iteration of 4X Empires.

I always felt independents were more useful, than anything else. I enjoyed having them as forward operating bases and outposts. I want a real threat. People who actually sabotage your colonies and cause mayhem.

Like Xeno Cults? If encounters are added, like in age of pirates or cyber knights, they could sabotage ship building, destroy factories or defense's, or just reduce population...

How about planetary disasters ... Starship crash, destroying the star dock and screwing tp. Reactor meltdown or natural disaster that impacts colonists, cp,tp, or all.
Wild cat animal revolts, or indigenous uprising.
Plagues that spread across planets forcing quarantined. This is particularly cool because you could have a a turn incubation and any ship traveling from that planet to others have a hitch chance of transferring the contagion. That forces you to shut down interplanetary travel until you have the plague under control.
Stars going supernova world be cool too, but that should be rare. It's wipe out at least one colony if not more.

But those could be game-ending events! Maybe a warning before said events, like 20 turns ahead of time, and I'd be okay with that.

Officer Genious I really don't believe a cat uprising would be game-ending ANd I'd LOVE to see the effect of a plague that impacts ships in orbit, and trade and all of that ... MAYBE we could give a Xeno a cold. It worked on War of the Worlds - so it must be effective

Hey cat uprisings are dangerous! When my cat gets feisty I have a hard time doing anything without getting pounced on...
