Hello there,
I've got a little question about the Stars Traders Elite game (android). Are there any *not really necessary but hey lets make sure life is a pain without them* in game / in app purchases present? Like so many other mobile games out there these days?

Not really. The ship designer will let you start out with much more optimised ships than the basic ones, and the character designer sounds fairly ace, and the Rapid Rank achievements would be much easier if you can start out with extra Rep using it, but, on the whole, the Trese Brothers actually aren't that evil. And honestly, the Elite versions are essentially IAPs themselves. They certainly aren't necessary if you just want a little fun.

The game contains 670 ships, almost every variation you can create with the Ship Designer is already present in the game, or achievable with upgrades.
The game contains around 50 Award-style Unlocks that can be achieved through skillful play -- those Unlocks can be skipped with an IAP.
Everything in the game that is unlockable was added after we had spent almost 3 years (152 updates) improving and completing the game. It is all just icing on the cake.
The Unlock was added at the request of players who wanted to skip the Awards. I myself do not use it -- the Awards are all pretty easy to get.
The Ship Designer was added to give players who have owned thousands of ships over years of play a chance to design their own.
The Character Designer is only able to change starting stats, after a few hours of play all Captains can reach the same stat balance and with the large array of starting professions and builds, the Character Editor is really aimed at players who have played more than 100 Captains.

"All the awards are easy to get" ?!?!?!?!?!?!!!! Not the ones that require you to kill aliens in 'Crazy'... Mind you, I play on challenging, with I think 1 captain in Demanding. When you have played for 3 years I suppose the awards would get easier EDIT: Whoops, I got 'awards' mixed up with 'unlocks'. An unlock is received by getting an award on a certain difficulty.

My best time for unlocking all the awards is around 4 hours. I think 6 hours is probably about average?

Ok, that explains it a little bit, kinda.
So there's the free version, the elite paid version (bigger universe, more ships ...) and then there are the unlockables? And the ship designer, and the character designer?
... maybe better try the free version after work this evening :-)

You will find that life is a pain without the elite version, if you see anyone else playing in a vastly larger quadrant than you

The free version contains about 80% of the core rules -- so if you love that game, you probably will eventually upgrade to Elite. Definitely best to play Free.

Lol: DO NOT BUY OUR GAME!!!
I started on the free version of all TB games except HoS. They are definitely very playable with loads of content. The free bit of HoS took me a few hours to complete.

Probably tired of people going "I am a professional gamer and I can't figure out what my objective is in a sandbox game. Obviously this game is mocking me and full of bullshit. One star until developer adds in better graphics and tells you everything without ever needing a manual."

The objective of ST is really simple... make lots of money, command cool ships, and destroy your enemies. Of course when you're a Steel Song Zealot everyone is an enemy :-)

Been playing the free version, and it's addicting :-). So far i've gotten loads of crewmembers killed, contracted some infections, blew up ships that should not have been blown up and seriously skewed my reputation across the galaxy... all that in a mere two hours. Imagine the damage i could do in a week ! ;-)
The inapp purchases are not obvious, not in your face, not even mentioned so far. Totally awesome from you guys. I just saw how much bigger the game is in the elite version, and i'm hooked.
Now excuse me, i'm sure there are some infections waiting for me to contract.
