Over several weeks from buying the game till now and this is how things stand: 15 Deaths and about to fight the shaman in E1. Score is about 11 million. Easy difficulty, of course But, hey it's my first group so who cares! They seem to be fitting their name 'The Lost' quite well so far. Soon I will be starting a new group, 'The Damned', when I pick up some of the extra characters. Suggestions welcome! This game is soooooo long. It probably doesn't help I have been distracted pretty thoroughly recently though, not much time for HoS.

Hah! You're right about this game being long. I used to think of defeating the Shaman as really getting somewhere. Then I started thinking about it sort of like my team graduating from highschool. Now it feels more getting out of elementary school. There is soooooo much afterwards.
As for an additional character. That's tough. Probably not Fyona, she's brings some cools stuff to the table, but is probably the most difficult to use well. Vincent is the master of AoE damage. Selen brings a lot more versatility to the sneak spot and lets you really do some different things with groups. Kincaid, I find him far more easy to build and make into a powerhouse than Vraes, even if he is more fragile.

This game is huge. Huge dedication by the TB to put out so much content at such a low cost. I could never stay dedicated to one project for so long. As for extra chars: I've not used Kincaid yet but my next play through I intend to. He sounds better than Vraes (for my style). One thing I've learnt over the course of my recent play through: defence beats offense. You need to build up stats that avoid taking hits. As for the other " for purchase" characters, Selen is awesome. I was never too keen on Tamilin, she was too much a weak link once I hit Ep2 and enemy ai strategies changed. Selen is easily the most valuable character in my builds. I like Vincent over Kjartan too, although that is more of a trade-off. Worth it though. Fast track level 10 lightening spear and laugh as he takes out 6 baddies by himself in one turn. (Can't do that as they get harder... but can still significantly weaken them later on) Fy vs Ky more of a toss up. I think I like Fyona more... a little tougher less of a liability, even if her healing doesn't seem as good. Overall though, don't think you can go wrong with extra characters. Haven't played Kincaid yet, but I suspect my next build will be all the new chars.

Thanks for the suggestions!
Now at 16 deaths and 20 million points. I must try not to lead with Tam down narrow 1 wide passages with no room for Vraes to move up when the inevitable spawn occurs.
Still looking for the shaman! I've got to 'vermin lair', so he shouldn't be too far now. I've already had one false alarm when I killed a normal shaman and thought he was the shaman...
My iOS gaming budget is fairly stretched at the moment, will be making a thread under 'general' if anyone wants to chip in.

You won't miss the "right" fight as there will be a lengthy conversation to open it. But, well, good luck on your journey!

You're in for honestly my favorite fight of the game. Be prepared for a long, uphill battle against more rats than you've ever seen before. Good luck and watch out for archers and shamans sniping from the ledges!

Update! The Shaman is Dead! Long live Oskahold! 34 million, 22 deaths.
It was a tough fight, but eventually I managed to get all the veterans to target Vraes who stood several squares in front of the rest of my squad who just sort of cowered behind him. With some excellent shooting from Tam and the CA/IM combo from KJ, the veterans, archer spam and deathkin were dispatched, leaving only the third and final incarnation of the great shaman quetisbslandv.
He was slain by Vraes, who stepped inside his guard after he staggered backwards from the aimed shot Tam had put through his chest. With the breach blade cleaving the vermins' head from his shoulders, Oskahold was safe. For now...
End of Act 1.

This game is soooooo long. It probably doesn't help I have been distracted pretty thoroughly recently though, not much time for HoS. I remember the first time I killed the shaman. That was before E1A2 was released and I was pretty happy thinking that the Shaman was the end of Episode 1. There is so much value in TB games!

That reminds me of Mother Earth series. The first time you play it, you think "Now, is the end… oh, no? Ok, now, THIS must be the end… No? Damn, what? No? Again? Oh, ok, I'll just sit back now and wait." Thankfully, HoS gives you a clear idea of the game length from the first screens, though, you may not realize this until later… but it still leaves you with impression, that "you always knew it", but you're not spoiled at the same time.
