Not sure if this could be implemented at this point, but i was just thinking how life would look for the new colonists, and I couldn't help but to think that besides the Xeno, we couldn't possibly be alone in the Quadrant in terms of threats. I'm not talking about space-faring sentient life, but I am thinking about having a sentient life form that already inhabited a planet or two within the system. Naturally they would object to a new civilization being put down on their home world and would seek to attack the newcomers.
Not every system would have a threat this substantial, but having something to attack your colony would force the player to make different decisions than they would in the times before first contact with the Xeno, where the game is kinda *cough*(boring)*cough* slow.
Perhaps if this is something that could be implemented, morale penalties would be slowly incurred at the start of a planetary conflict. As hostilities escalated, population penalties could be implemented, construction efforts could be affected, and more severe morale losses would certainly come into play. Ways to prevent this would certainly focusing on planetary defenses, PDF(?) Forces, Or perhaps stationing a fighter/cruiser/carrier vessel in orbit could help assist in the defense of the colony.
I know it's random, but I really feel like this would make a cool addition to the game, and would really spice up the game a bit.
Thanks for your consideration!
