Has anyone tried focusing Vincent on melee combat? Been thinking about this for a bit but gonna wait till I finish the game to try it out.

Even with boost-in I can't justify making him a melee machine... He does SO MUCH DAMAGE with Lightning Spear... I'm waiting for the next boost-in point to give it another go, so I'll let you know if it ever comes out

If you're going to do it, I generally find you want to make sure you aren't overloading on melee characters. Too many means they can't all get in and use their AP well. A good technique is to give him some powerful curses and be Storm-Strike Vincent. Then if he isn't slaying with lit-damage, he is dropping hard curses. Considering that he is squishy, his Flash Freeze is a good option.

I have only ever really considered making a melee Vincent. Even with LS I pump his blades so that when I am not casting that I am doing effective spirit free damage. This is the one factor that I feel puts him on par with Kjartan. Without his blades option I would pretty much always go to the superior cursing and pretty even damage of the Fire Mage. Seriously, Choking Ash makes episode 1 and 2 way easier.

I first picked him intending him to be melee but he just wasn't cutting it as a melee unit for me and li spear was just too good.

His E3 weapon from Platinum Heights is so unbelievably OP... I want to get a melee Vincent to that point so freaking bad...

I'm not quite there with current build but from memory I don't recall the staff being a huge upgrade from the one the druid gives you was it?

Shame only Vincent can use it. My Vincent was very much a range unit at that point in the game. (and this play through is again... I'll definitely be picking staff again). I'd love Vraes or Selen to have the Storm Cleave though as one of their two blades.

Disclaimer: never tried melee Vincent I'm only on ep2 hard so take it with a grain of salt, but I find some features becoming more useful as the chars level up/enemies difficulty rises. On ep1 I loved pinning shot but in ep2 I couldn't imagine not having my re-spec melee selen. Though I have no idea how ranged or hybrid selen would have done, but I'd be in a lot of trouble without a second tank, as I noticed kyera wasn't cutting it as buffer/curser/offtank. If you have any respecs left, give it a go at higher levels? Honestly I'm just curious, don't do it if you don't feel like it

Melee Vincent is my hardest hitter right now. His ability to wear Mage robes that add good damage plus the fact that he does not need to tank and so can use 3 damage trinkets puts him in the solid lead. Right now I am not using his relic (please make a 1 ap version!) because he does far more damage with a tulwar. If you have not played around with strickening and melee Vincent you are missing out. I have his energy storm high and +70 lightning damage on him so he casts that and moves in for 4 hits, 7 if I can't hit more than 3 with energy storm. With strickening on, I kid you not, he does 200-280 (less on really high resist mobs like shaman, but still 150-200 on them) per hit and that is with a 1 ap weapon...melee Vincent is tops!

Hope nobody minds the resurrection here...
In all my groups, melee Vincent remains the one thing I have yet to get right. It's starting to dig at my brain, like an itch I can't reach...
Can someone please share some group concepts, builds, or strategies that make melee a better/comparable option than just going Lightning Strike/Energy Storm?
I've tried, failed, boosted in, failed, and I'm out of ideas.

Or will it always be a second class build compared to that of pure ranged damage output?

Sundering + Charged Speed + Fyona's Strickening + Tam's Torrent + 1AP blade + +elemental damage gear
Sundering and Charged Speed help with defense and positioning, Strickening and Torrent lower resistances to make the elemental damage more efficient. That build will deal extremely high and stable damage. You also got so many MPs that you can move into the enemy back ranks, kill stuff, and move out again.
All in all my plan is:
Kincaid Sure Parry 7 Cunning Footwork 10 Flanking Unity 8 Storm of Steel 1 Live by the Blade 7 Flashing Blades 10 Lunge 1 Darting Steel 1
Fyona Shield of Cortias 10 Strickening 10 Reckoning 10 Consecrated Defense 10 Zealous Strikes 1 Hammer Blow 1 Blessed Aura 1 Battlefield Devotion 1
Tam Blacknight 10 Deadly Intuition 10 Torrent 9 Onslaught 1 Aimed Shot 1 Silent Stalker 10 Disarming Touch 1 Farsight 1 Precision Pick 1
Vincent Frigid Air 10 Charged Speed 10 Thundering Blades 10 Sundering 10 Flash Freeze 1 Lightning Spear 1 Storm Strike 1
Kincaid and Fyona are the main frontliners, with Kincaid always positioning in a way that most melee enemies start next to him. Tam aims at attacking the back ranks. Vince acts as a melee skirmisher. All characters have high dodge, which along with Frigid Air 10 should pull the tooth out of most ranged attacks, and Kincaid will suck the melee attacks with his high defenses and Sure Parry. You can potentially switch attacks for Kincaid. Darting Steel for debuffs instead of Flashing Blades or drop Live by the Blade to 1 if you're confident with your MP.
It is important to notice that Vince will start out as a ranged attacker and respec once Strickening is up and running.
