I'm looking for pointers on how deal with these types of systems. Right now I have several systems with quality of 8 or 9. I'm hoping that I can stay ahead of the population curve on these colonies with active research, while at the same time getting some income/production from them.

The first thing that really helps is to research deep space colonization 1, which unlocks star port 4. 3pop/3cp/5spice/1 mine
Palace 2 is nice as well provides 5 spice and holds 1 pop as well as other bonuses
Orbital defense and orbital platforms later.
Orbital mines are nice refineries too if javat
And of course upgrading hab units
Oh and the Thulun naval academy is amazing as well for all the benefits it provides for one quality, but faction specific

Those colonies can be among your most productive, if they have Minerals above 10. If they don't, you should focus on Trade. The key to making tons of Credits off these worlds is to remember -- the Colonists are a drag on your economy. Your goal is to plan your use of CORE and ORBITAL upgrades to maximize profits while housing the minimum number of workers. 8 Quality means less people will settle there and you'll never have to worry about housing 50P

Year 20, that Colony has been productive for about 12 years. I should see if we can put how old each colony is on that screen, another useful big of information for the player.

I must say some other faction specific techs that I have come to really appreciate are Alta Mesa's star forges basically 0 quality mega factories, and moklumnue's orbital tradeways. Although for money making javat is still my favorite.

Javat, Mok, and Thulun. Insane income, plus Thulun is a research powerhouse. So happy with this game lately...

So why has naval academy been brought up but not steel fortress? Steel fortresses have very good maintenance rates with habitation and defence.

When I use the Steel Song they are my primary fighter producer and for fortress worlds. In my opinion they're at their best at the front,pulling the Xenos off of the other factions.

Steel song 5xp bonus is great...the thulan academy provides +CP among other things the stel song fortress is underwhelming

Having a Steel Fortress could actually be better than a Thulun Academy on low quality worlds, because they have twice as much population space, and not worrying about population so much can free up a spot for another upgrade. Steel Fortresses also have low incredibly low maintenance rates.
Another aspect of Steel Song often overlooked is that them starting with a Steel Fortress 1 gives them a starting hab enabling them to start up almost as fast as a Thulun world while having their own awesome ship bonus (and lower maint rates).
