All right contributor! That's the way to do it! Here are my latest level 1 and 2 tries on Normal, Cory Trese, I'm not worried at the moment about bonuses. Can't remember where I saw it mentioned. I figured it would be something added way later. I'm just having fun practicing and getting ready for them. Take your time, I'm having a blast right now as it is.

Glad to see that the speed play is getting everyone to really hone their game! Bonuses will be granted in later phases of Alpha.

I'm in no danger of making the speed goal. I prefer to use bounding and base of fire tactics. Its really hard to keep good sector coverage if everyone maxes out their MPs every turn.

As Tzu would say dayan, "Speed is the essence of war."

Sun Tsu didn't have to deal with auto-spawning head crabs. Besides, to drop another old quote, slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

Yeah, dayan is right about maintaining fields of fire. I just love playing recklessly aggressive in these kinds of games. The only problem is that I lose Templars now and again and usually that loss would have been avoidable if I had only been taking things a little easier. Still, glad to hear that the speed bonuses will be making their way in down the line. Carrots like that always get me riled up! And, contributor, that level 3 goal achievement is amazing! I'm still going on my game but I'm going to guess I'm over 50 turns in at this point, haha.

There are times to move quickly, and times to move slow and careful. Read about the battles on Pacific islands during WWII, where the Japanese were dug in like no army has ever been dug in. When the US forces just took their time, like on iwo Jima, they often ended up with over 5:1 kill ratio. That's a pretty amazing number for being on the attack. Trying to move quickly in that kind of action would be suicide. On the other hand, on Saipan they were close enough to Japan that kamikaze attacks could reach them, and the ships were getting torn up, so speed became more important (and losses were higher as a result). Moving slow against xenos is fine, unless they are spawning faster than you're killing them. Sometimes you've got to move before they become so numerous that you just get overwhelmed and you're doing everything you can to stay alive in one place, and you'll never get moving again. Good game designers can make some missions require methodical reduction, and some require sprints to avoid annihilation. Fortunately, we all know some good game designers. BTW, is there a penalty for getting lots of troops killed? In some of my games, I've had engineers and scouts getting killed like Star Trek redshirts, but fortunately I was able to replenish via the tact point and keep moving forward. But my Captain would have had a lot of unwelcome letters to write after the battle.

Here's my first game, on normal: Counter Attack was 16 Turns, 43 kills. That Power Relay Grid took me a couple of tries. My second game, on Difficult: Counter Attack: 17 Turns, 43 Kills. The Power Grid goes a lot quicker when you know which way to go. I just finished the first mission on hard: This time I was concentrating on speed. It's not ntsheep's 8 turns, but it's on hard. Actually, disregarding the difficulty, 8 turns is pretty impressive. I'd be hard pressed to shave off 3 turns, even with no enemies. I'm gonna have to try harder next time through.

Or Napoleon when he invaded Russia in winter instead of late spring or summer...

Oh, he started on June 24th. He just expected to be able to spend the winter in a nice city with lots of housing and food for his troops. He wasn't expecting the Russians to burn Moskow to the ground. I get the impression that the Russians weren't really expecting to burn it either, but once a few fires got started by accident, some of them decided to help things along and suddenly Napoleon found himself in an abandoned ruin of a city with winter at the door.
