I know that restaurants and clubs sometimes have other functions, but does the opportunity to eat or get "entertained" in a back room have any effect on game mechanics?

It costs credits, restores MP, increases the morale of team members and passes time.
In the future they will open sub-menus that are currently disabled in the market version because we're still testing them.
A future release will contain a more complete "back room" system

@cory: Err... do you mean that there'll be a Hentai minigame in the back rooms in future release? I'm glad I paid for it! ;D

@ BG He means hidden stuff. I think they will not add any minigames.(or maybe it starts a tentacle survival) (actually they have said they MAY make a minigame app)

The back room system will include a "social skills" hacking game that I'm still testing out.
It will use the same pattern as the end state of the hacking minigame, but use different skills and variations to keep it interesting. in addition, you'll be cutting deals with NPC instead of cracking open host firewalls.

So, it's for parley and recruitment (what, no Hentai? ). Good idea. But if the deal turns sour, would there be combat? And would it happen in the back room or would bouncers kick you out? ;D

that sounds cool. might i suggest, a new implant specifically for this? ive been playing deus ex in my spare time, and they have an implant for reading personality types, to give you a better idea how to speak to people. an easy way to implement it here would be something like this
a gun is being held to a team mate's head. you are involved in a conversation trying to save them. you can try several options.
Fennian Thug: "I will blow his freaking brains out if you don't back the hell off now!"
1. ) "You don't want to do this! We can work something out, we have money, just please! Put the gun down!"
2. ) "Go ahead. He's just the hired help. As a matter of fact, his contract is up tomorrow, and if you kill him now, I won't have to pay him. You'll be doing me a favor."
3. ) "If you hurt my friend, I WILL kill you. I will hunt down your friends, your family, everyone you have ever known. I will hunt down your CHILDREN.. and make them all SUFFER!"
4. ) Quick draw your firearm and attempt to shoot the Fennian Thug.
That is how it would appear to all the normal players. however, if you had an implant for linked weapons (i forget what you called it in the game) then the last option would have (60% Chance for Success) added to the end of the option.
AND if you happened to have the Social Interaction Calculated Knowledge Operator. (or SICKO) implant, then you would see this.
Fennian Thug: "I will blow his freaking brains out if you don't back the hell off now!"
1. ) "You don't want to do this! We can work something out, we have money, just please! Put the gun down!" (Reputation Check)
2. ) "Go ahead.
Just an idea. I figured that the system would be easy to implement since all it really does is color code the correct choices, or rather give you a better idea of what MIGHT work, and what your chances of it would be.
**EDIT** I forgot to mention, Green has a good outcome, while red has a bad outcome.

Ah.. if only there were Psionics. They could do the same shit without inserting foreign objects into their noggin.
I remember playing "Circuit's Edge" (an old game based on George Alec Effinger's novels) where head implants are the norm. One such chip "The Negotiator" could read expressions and measure adrenaline level, allowing you to gauge which response is best to use.

Cyber Knights includes space in the saved game for additional abilities and Andrew and I have had some really good discussions about DV, mutant powers, hacking vs. social vs. jobs ... I think if we manage to make it to that part of the plan you'll be pleased =)

Bioware strays a little bit too far outside of the CK world design, so we probably won't have that.
The characters will have to choose between rapid advantages from implants and DV loss, or a slower more difficulty (and XP heavy) path of advancing innate skills and futuristic psychic abilities.

@cory - Could we even use the word "Bioware" nowadays with all those pesky IP police? ;D
So, to jump the gun a little, advancing along the "Body" path will unlock "Mutations" while placing more emphasis on "Mind" will unlock "Psychics", correct? Damn, I'm tearing up just thinking about all the possibilities!
