What the heck are we going to do about the map navigator?
Ideas on improving it please =)
Some of your suggestions via e-mail would fix the issue, but I want to have map movement (so unlimited taxi is out) but I'm having trouble coming up with a control scheme I like.
Blue sky -- what would you do in my spot?

If I may be so bold as to suggest the following: 1) We can only know the locations on the map menu when we actually get there, or someone; connector-for instance, tells us about it. 2) All grids should be blacked out in a Fog of War and appear only when it is within 1 grid away (can be increased with implants) or, as (1), someone informed us about it. 3) Our Taxi options would then be limited to the locations we know about. 4) CyberNews Discs would also reveal certain locations, i.e. advertising by shops or recent important events which happened there (example: Vigilante CyberKnights attacked Mars Inc Secured Warehouse). 5) We could not scroll more than 1 map away from our current location. A GPS Implant would unlock the whole map. 6) Make taxis ridiculously expensive but is now able to travel under more heat. 7) Make Subways happen. That include meatball sammiches.

A sign or something along those lines outside enterable buildings saying what kind of building they are, armour shop, gun shop, doctors, ect that is much more pronounced would be nice.

I like the fog-of-war idea.
no building locations on the map until you have either visited it or a connector sends you there and adds it to your map

taxi price should be based on the number of blocks they have to travel through...
addendum: Pretty much everything blackgauntlet posted.

If it is possible could we make the minimap on the regular map screen show up on the detail map navigator? Its because whenever I have to hit the road in a taxi to make my dropoff/assasination/etc., I have to flip between the regular screen and the grid/map navigator screen to see where my mission needs me to get to. I think it would really help quest flow.

spectre - as an easier to implement fix, i +1 that idea, as it would really help! I find myself on the taxi screen trying to get to a job quickly and not being able to find the sector it is in.

I find myself on the taxi screen trying to get to a job quickly and not being able to find the sector it is in. fallen - That's actually one of my pet peeves... taking a Taxi to accomplish a mission. It takes some fun out of the job, making it just too easy. Taxis should be used only when absolutely necessary; avoiding loss of reputation due to deadline, avoiding high possibility of death and etc. If possible, the cab fare should be equal to, or more than, a normal paid job. Maybe about 150 Nuyen or more. Also, it does not make sense if I'm travelling from the Fenns to the Narrows for 25 bucks and having to pay 25 bucks from the Narrows to East Narrows. Is the fare meter even working? Alternative, non-direct, economical modes of transportation would definitely be a better option.

@blackguntlet -- Alternative routes...I agree.
Already there is the one taxi that will boat you down and drop you off on the south west side...
How about adding a Bus system? a Bus could transit locally between set spots, there would be a terminal and you would have to 'wait' for it.... there should be a no move/wait movement option available as well....
Maybe having to wait for a taxi.. ten turns or so, and if you are not there for your ride... you pay double next fare next time.
Re-visiting the taxi system... price per sector traveled i think is a best easy solution.

I am not sure what the Trese bros are planning but I think they are working something positive out. We'll just have to cross our fingers and wait.

So.. What do you not like about it? As far as controls, I really like it the way it is- which may be because I only play it on a tablet and not a phone. I do think there is too much detail on the 'map' screen. Even tho I do like 'fog of war' type blacking out until you have actually been to a location, it doesn't seem appropriate to me for this kind of setting. I can get maps on my phone of the city now in 2011; I would think this sort of information is readily available in 2217 as well. Same goes for places of business. Where I think there is too much detail are the things that are not businesses. Some Connectors probably advirtise, but many probably do not. Nobody probably cares about what most of the 'other' buildings are, the safe houses don't seem very safe if they are on every map, and the corps don't announce where all of their little facilities are. Most of these places would get a label once you have been there and determined what it is, but not all- in the setting, the 'Downtown Warehouse' may have a sign out front saying what it is, but the 'Secure Warehouse' may not. For these others that are obviously something, they get labeled as 'unknown' until you earn the 'right' to be allowed to know what it is.

For one thing, there's a reason why there's no cellphone in CyberKnights. Information is being controlled. That's why there are many things that we should NOT know without us actively searching for it. Otherwise, we could just hack the Matrix in some backwater motel's storage basement using our iPhone 220 without ever getting caught.

I am not at all advocating for cell phones, or portable network connectivity of any sort, in CyberKnights, for a few reasons, not the least of which is that I think it would take away from the story.
I was only using what I can do with my phone today as an example. In two hundred years, I still think you would be able to download a map of a section of town from your local data terminal and put it on your hand-held. Something like what Google Maps does now- it shows the streets and buildings, but even at the most zoomed-in (not including the streets view), it does not show all of the building names or addresses.
As for hacking into the Matrix from some secluded place for as long as you want to and not getting caught, if The Man can find you while you're using a public data terminal, why couldn't they find you no matter where you are? No matter how remote you are, you still have to plug in, so you can still be found.

But what I'm trying to say is: "Actively Searching for information" and not "spoonfed the information". You yourself have already gave a good example of how to expand our maps in a world where information is tightly controlled; by actively hacking the Matrix to download portions of it.

I wish I had Karma to give out to everyone on this thread.
What I don't like about the map navigation is that people tell me it doesn't work for them.
When someone tells you that it isn't working for them, they're almost always right.
When someone tells you how it is broken and exactly how to fix it, they're almost always wrong.
There reports are the former. Several people have said it feels "clunky"
Part of that is that I'm still struggling to get pinch zoom to work on all devices smoothly, i think that will help. Smooth walking probably do a lot too.
I think the problem goes back to "Castle of the Winds" and the fact that your keyboard had a number pad with 7 directions =)
