Would it be possible to have an upgrade that expands the the green zones around planets? Maybe have it be a late game technology or reduce quality to compensate. It could be a perk for one of upcoming factions...

Too powerful to be faction specific, but great late game tech idea. Advanced fuel stations or something as an orbital upgrade

I wouldn't decline a chance to add eight squares to the pool. (So that it's less of a cross and more like a circle.)

(So that it's less of a cross and more like a circle.) Even if it was more limited (maybe just making the current yellow squares green), it would still be a godsend in certain situations. And if indiscriminate use is deemed undesirable (changing the balance too much?), that could be discouraged with high maintenance costs. Another possibility for limiting use would be high penalty costs in certain political conflicts, which could make excessive use extremely risky.

It would be cool to be able to make space stations as a refueling point instead of having to colonize every planet to reach xenos.

Something that is definitely on the roadmap, the ability change the sector control mesh.
Unfortunately, it's built and baked before the game is shipped, so changing it isn't easy work

It'd be nice to have it sort of like a road system in Civ. Only, instead of building the road, you choose the distribution of your green sectors, so long as they're all connected. For instance, you could have an isolated System with a string of green sectors that lead to a Star Cluster, only the planets have a smaller area around them to refuel at, since those green sectors had to be moved to contribute to the "road".

Yes! this would also be similar to the Star Traders game, using CP a colony could establish a 'supply line'
