HI fallenI have the correct updated Visual Studio Runtime 2012 installed. I have also Verified the File Cache with STEAM and it is OK. Clicking the TA BF Icon on the desktop, just brings up the hour glass for a second or two, then..... zilch. I've tried running the prog' in online and offline mode with Steam. Same result. I'll do a few more checks my end to make sure nothing has changed on my setup, but ST 4x was running fine.

The problem seems to be with the loader. If I click the TA BF icon on desktop, and wait. The Steam Login appears and then I'm sent to the Steam Update News screen, but no TA BF.

I just re installed ST4x and it ran without a hitch. Means that the x86 2012 runtimes are still OK.

Running a game in Steam without Steam running will only open Steam, it won't open the game.
Unfortunately XP support is turned on and seems to be working in general. Can you look in the Event Log or Steam log for error messages?
What version of XP are you using? SP3?

I will look in the steam error log, once the plumber fixing my hot water is finished. Swimming in water while using a PC is not too good an idea.

Cory Trese. Hi. I checked the debug log with STEAM, and it says.... "It's all Cory and Andrew's fault. Nothing to do with STEAM, it's client, or associates". Of course, I knew this was wrong, because it's really all Martin's fault, but don't tell him I grassed him up. Seriously. The problem is in the Graphics Block. [0924/172417:ERROR: renderer_main.cc(200)] Running without renderer sandbox. GAME OVER. <sob>

I have tons of those in my log
[0917/143800:ERROR:renderer_main.cc(200)] Running without renderer sandbox
That's coming from the internal web browser not running in optimized mode. Valve is just ... not coding it right.
But that error isn't the problem.

Actually Cory. I just realised. The "Preparing to launch for the first time" dialog, did not happen?

I have already checked all my PC event and error logs, and there is nothing amiss. ALL of my STEAM games will happily run in offline mode, as well as online. If I come up with the answer, I'll post it for anyone else that may encounter the issue. The best I could find was problems with Pcars.exe, but that does not exist on my system, and maybe it's just for x64?

You haven't used an ASSERT command to fix the screen res to an expected value have you? I'm running in 1024x768.

Cg - just to confirm, 4X and Heroes are working fine? There is no sort of pop up or error when it fails?

Cg - the posted link is broken. I don't know what it means to bypass the Steam event handler. Thanks for the additional information. Can you post a corrected link?

connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/783276The link is OK. For some reason MS wanted a temporary account login, but it's freely available again. Manually running TA BF and bypassing The Steam Interface is simply going to the SteamApps\Common\ProgramName.exe, and running the .exe without going through STEAMS front end. The front end tends to hide any errors that the desktop is trying to send, so I cut out the middleman. HoS and ST4x don't give an error when manually run. TA BF does. Looks like either a direct reference has been made to the procedure, instead of going through the correct tool, or a new procedure in the latest version of 2012 is being called that is not available in the XP Kernel?

That VS issue was fixed in SP3. We're now running on SP5, so must be something else. And we don't use ATL or MFC
