Gear does affect damage. The accessories you wear affect everything (spells and weapon attacks) as do shields and staves. Any other weapon besides staves only affect attacks made with that weapon. For instance, Vincent is using a sword that gives +10 lightning damage. If he cast Storm Strike 1 he will get a total of +14 lightning damage on the attack. If however he casts energy storm he gets no bonus on the lightning damage from the sword as it is not a staff and does not add any damage to spells (only sword attacks). This is why casters that do damage should always wear staves and why it is hard to make a melee + spell caster Vincent/Kyera (because you either equip a staff to improve spell damage or equip a sword/mace to increase weapon damage, but never both at once). Good info. Thank you! I wish I would have known that before I spent 8000 gold on a shield for Kyera but...it's only money. So me walking around with the 6% SP drain on my hammer isn't doing me any good on the occasional instances I use Holy Retribution. Like I said, my only problem now is I don't have much of a staff to switch to and I'll lose my shiny new 7 Parry 62HPs 2 Armor shield. Kyera is really quite strong. Are you sure she can't carry a staff one-handed?

So help me understand this please....if I have Banishment 2 and I cast it with my hammer, I get the 25-64 Holy Damage and that's it. Which is 24 base physical + d40 holy damage, correct?
If I cast it while having the Staff of Yew equipped (15-24; +8 Holy damage), then I'd get 39 base physical damage + d49 holy damage + another d8 of more holy damage...is that right?

I'm pretty sure you don't get any physical dmg add from weapons when casting ranged spells (including staves). You'd simply get a d48 holy die instead of the d40 (staff exclusive benefit for ranged spells), so a 20% holy dmg range increase, or every 6th enemy will take extra damage from HR or banishment on average. Physical dmg from the weapon would be vs the armor if you use smite instead, her 1 range physical attack. Edit: Just checked, and banishment 2 is 24 +d38 (25-62) so actual benefit from the staff would be ~5% better than I stated unless you're getting more holy dmg from another item. Damage dice just become one larger die of the same type, not 2 separate dice, unless they are of different types of damage.

Only magical damage from Staves moves over to casting spells.
If you have a hammer with +8 Holy Dmg, that is used whenever you swing with a melee attack with the hammer. It's Dmg (20-40) is used when you swing in melee.
If you have a staff with +8 Holy Dmg, that is used when you cast a spell (Banishment). It's Dmg (8-16) is used if you swing with it in melee, but you also get the +8 Holy Dmg.

Does anyone ever use a staff in melee?

KJ is no Gandalf.
Though I like to think of Vincent as a cross between Gandalf and Emporer Palpatine...

I actually use kjartsn's melee attack occasionally 😉
At some points, when everything is cursed and I don't want to waste sp on a talent, a melee attack is fine.
A fully debuffed enemy with Kjartan running Acc and damage gear hits surprisingly hard and with reasonable frequency.
Mind you this is rare, as I begrudge using fire bolt as a melee attack takes 0 sp and may generate sp.
I do not go out of my way to attack with melee and staves.
It also may be possible to run a tank Kyera and staves to get the dex benefit.

I second phaze's post. I use Kjartan's melee occasionally as well for all of the same reasons. It does actually hit pretty hard. Especially with Burning Blades running. In most of my battles there's a pretty clear turning point from danger to cleanup. Once I've taken care of the danger, I switch to clean up mode and start trying to max my SP recovery. For instance, I'll swing most of my weapons in generic fashion. No talent strikes. It's weird but...I seem to generate a lot more criticals when I'm swinging base strikes versus when I use a talent strike.

There is no increased chance of criticals or any other special feature on basic attacks.
They do often have the best ROI for SP Drain users, especially heavily buffed ones.
In the very early versions of HoS where last hit XP was a big deal, you NEEDED to use this cleanup staff strategy to keep KJ (ash wizard) equal with Vraes.

Nothing like getting back 15-25 SP for free =)
