I play as an independent explorer captain on demanding and I always get slaughtered by aliens.
They attack me in early game when I havent had much chance to lvl stealth and pilot.
Is this just bad luck? Should I avoid certain planets? Or upgrade something more? Im getting bored of starting over till the unavoidable alien encounter kills me off sooner or later.

Avoid Wild Zones, especially when you have a full hold. Watch for rumors of Alien attacks and stay close to the Core Worlds, like Cadar Prime, or the other Faction Homeworlds.

Thanks, Ill try. Generating my next captain right now. DeValtos Merchant for a change, before I get back to exploring Uhm another quick question: can I do awards at higher difficulties than stated in the description and still claim them? Or does it have to be that exact difficulty?

Oh come on, I was building up some rep as trader when I had to stop at some indi world to refuel. Urban zone? Pfft! Alien time!
But I admit I did not check the map for rumors before docking there.
