I'm at a loss of how to play a MO, so I'm looking for some tips. What ships should I be looking at? What contracts do you do for money? Anything besides contracts for money? Help?

A MO for the MO, hmmmmmm. I'd stick with easy contracts like message\passenger delivery until you get your skills built up some.

Pretty much for any class, I just do exploring and simple contracts trying to build up rep and waiting for a good spy war. Then I'll spy, sell the records made back increasing my rep and getting good exp at the same time.

Even my smugglers are failing at doing Clan rep. Maybe I need a break. I might go play some Banner Saga and let loose some steam.

I have been studying your guide and its been useful. My issue I think is being in a crummy section of Clan space in the beginning-- the one to the upper left? Yeah, it runs out of contracts and WF a LOT, and it screws over a bunch of characters... Wish I was placed a bit to the right...

Officer Genious lol two options for you, either head over to the section of Map in my guide and take your lumps rep wise with the syndicates or else find yourself a similar setup with them. (Have heard there is a short haul goods run for Syndicate loyalists as well. ) Main point from my "guide" was to play it very cautious early game, stick in green space as much as possible, don't engage in combat unless forced to and watch the rumors and political situation. If you've got the character creator you can actually give yourself a bit of a leg up by re-assigning the starting Skills for MO for a better ships captain. Also while I said in guide you could start engaging in spying with tactics of 5-6, I'd suggest waiting till you get tactics to around 10+.

Ha-ha, I hit a bug or glitch where I was leveling my rep with the Syndicates and ended up with Honor Ships for the Clans, so I'm hoping to pull off the opposite to get my Syndicate Ships. X.x I think my issue is that the MO has no tactics or pilot to begin with, and dumping points into them doesn't get me but so far. I thought that maybe it meant I should blockade in the early game-- it didn't work. At all. And the enemy Ships have no problem wrecking house no matter how many points I immediately dump into pilot either. I'm not used to having to avoid enemy factions for a combat-focused class. O.o I gotta be missing something.

Working on fixing that for next. Yay, you found the bug!! (Cheers) I can loot in peace!! I finally got a MO past level 6 to get some of that REAL money, so I'm delivering goods and crap all over the place. I can finally hold my own in a fight, but truth be told I'd rather be a mail courier. I'll take a pic or so for future reference. I was missing some stealth. Once I got that up to say, 5, I stopped getting creamed at long/medium range and made some better soaks at close range by ignoring tactics and dumping in pilot. When I get my screenshot up here it'll be clearer.

Officer Genious I haven't played the MO for such a long time specifically because I always pick captains that start with high pilot. Nonetheless, the first thing I try and do at the beginning of any game is to hunt for a shortage or two and fulfill them. Ideally shortages in non-restricted goods is great because you can surrender without having your stuff confiscated. Yes, surrendering to pirates is not an option and you will still need to deal with them as you see fit, but hopefully you are only getting a small percentage of pirate encounters to begin with. Thee shortages should get you to $100k+. Your first shortage doesn't get you a lot because you honestly can't afford to fill your hold with enough of the goods to count for anything. That might actually be a bonus because if you don't dump a pile into the short-market, you don't end the shortage. It means you can tap that well again with a second cargo Shortages trump contracts just because the delivery contracts don't give you much at the beginning (sometimes not even enough to cover fuel/repair costs), and you also get -ve RP as a result of your actions.
